Industrial History at the Port

Almería reveals its history not only through grand representative buildings but also through traces of technology at the port. The Cable Inglés was built between 1902 and 1904 to enable the maritime export of iron ore from Alquife via the port of Almería. Since 1998, the Cable Inglés has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category because of its technical and historical value. Its construction period, function and protection status come together here to offer a concrete insight into the city's industrial past.

The Alcazaba above the Medina

The Alcazaba stands on a hill overlooking Almería's original city centre, the Medina. It was built at the behest of Abderrahmán III in the 10th century, following the city's foundation. Its complex consists of three areas: two Muslim sections and a final Christian section. The latter was built after the city was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489. The Alcazaba thus makes several historical layers visible within a single architectural complex.

Photography and Sacred Architecture

The Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía offers a permanent interdisciplinary photography programme with exhibitions, workshops, events, publications and other activities. The Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía in Almería is located in the former Liceo in the city's historic centre.

Almería Cathedral also combines several functions. It is a fortress cathedral that served both for worship and to protect the population from attacks by Barbary pirates. Its cloister is Neoclassical and dates from the late 18th century. When viewing the building, it is therefore worth considering its religious design as well as its military role and the later architectural period.

Beach, Port Heritage and Underground Galleries

Playa de Almería (urbana) is an approximately three-kilometre-long sandy beach in Almería. Another connection with the sea is provided by Almería's historic port heritage, which was opened to the public in 2023 as a promenade and seaside viewpoint. The approximate beach length also provides a clear indication of scale when planning a beach or walking section.

The underground galleries lie beneath the city. They are 4.5 kilometres long and located at a depth of nine metres. Their length and depth can be taken into account when planning the timing of an individual section beneath the city. Together with the Cable Inglés, the Alcazaba and the Cathedral, they also offer a perspective below Almería's present-day cityscape: industrial history, fortress architecture and underground spaces belong to different, clearly distinguishable aspects of the city's cultural profile.
