Crafts

Níjar’s traditional craft identity includes jarapas, pottery and esparto processing. Due to the historical and cultural significance of its craft activities, the Villa de Níjar was officially declared a Zona de Interés Artesanal. The Zona de Interés Artesanal of Níjar comprises seven workshops. They produce pottery, ceramics, fabrics on a flat loom or jarapas, as well as wind instruments made from pita wood. The Museo La Casa de Los Artesanos is dedicated to Níjar’s deeply rooted craft traditions and its heritage in pottery, hand-painted ceramics and jarapa weaving.

History

The parish church of Santa María de la Anunciación was built in the 16th century at the behest of Bishop Antonio Corrionero. The parish church of Santa María de la Anunciación has a defensive function and retains its original clock. The Atalaya de Níjar dates from 1574. It is the only surviving above-ground element of the former Arab fortress. The Atalaya district is one of the areas of Níjar where Arab origins can be particularly clearly recognized.

Water and Landscape

The Museo del Agua is a municipal cultural center in the old town of the Villa de Níjar. The information panels cover the history of Níjar’s first inhabitants, the Alumbres de Rodalquilar and the Hispano-Muslim period. Other topics include livestock farming and dryland agriculture, the Isabel II reservoir, the colonization settlements and modern desalination techniques. The Museo del Agua conveys the importance of water and its management over time in the arid Campo de Níjar.

The viewpoint at the Atalaya offers an extensive panoramic view of the Villa de Níjar and Cabo de Gata. There are two landscape observatories on the Cerro de la Atalaya in Níjar. They were established after a path and its surroundings were upgraded.

Hiking

The S15 Sendero de los Molinos–Huebro GR-140 is a linear hiking trail of moderate difficulty. It is 2.55 km long and ends in Níjar. The Mirador de la Atalaya de Níjar can be reached on foot from the center of the Villa de Níjar. The S15 passes through a lushly vegetated gorge with orchards and water mills to a viewpoint. The surrounding area is recognized as a Paisaje de Interés Cultural de Andalucía. The trail also passes the remains of more than 22 water mills that were associated with grain milling. The route through the fields of Níjar is easily accessible via a motorway.
