Retamar: Beach, Park and Cycling
Accommodation in Retamar
Retamar stretches as a narrow, elongated strip for about three kilometres from north to south and is only a few hundred metres wide from east to west. This layout provides a concrete starting point for planning your trip: first consider whether the beach, green spaces or cycling should shape your stay. When looking for a hotel, you can use these interests as a guide and consciously choose the focus of your trip.

Beach and promenade
The town’s layout runs parallel to Rambla del Agua and ends at a beach promenade about 600 metres long, sloping down towards the Mediterranean. Playa de Retamar is an urban beach, borders the residential area of the same name and lies beside the promenade. Its coastline stretches for 600 metres and consists of pebbles and coarse sand. The promenade and the coastline are therefore two distinct points of reference: the route along the water on one hand, and the character of the beach on the other.
Playa de Retamar beach has designated play areas and a dedicated water sports area. El Toyo Beach offers a different focus: it was restored in 2005 for the Mediterranean Games and is considered suitable for water sports. Strong surf is cited as one of its characteristic features; sea conditions vary depending on the day and time of year. You can take these different coastal features into account without assuming that play or water sports facilities are specifically suitable for your family.
Green spaces in Parque de El Toyo-Retamar
Parque de El Toyo-Retamar forms a three-kilometre-long green belt, with a width that varies between 60 and 600 metres. The park includes trees, shrubs, lawns, paved paths and shaded pergola areas. There are also children’s play areas and spaces for roller skating. A 2,300-metre-long cycle path complements these facilities. Elevated pedestrian bridges offer sweeping panoramic views of the coast.
This gives you several options for planning your day: cycling, roller skating, play areas or views from the elevated bridges. These features describe the park as a green space with several specific recreational facilities, not merely as a scenic backdrop. Vegetation and park facilities may change; check current conditions when planning a specific visit.
Cycling route, Plaza del Mar and local cuisine
The AlmerĂa-El Toyo Anthercas route connects urban and coastal sections for cycling. It passes through planted areas, along promenades and on coastal paths. One planted section includes wooden walkways and viewpoints. The route also runs alongside the artificial lake at the Auditorio and passes bars in Plaza del Mar. In comparison, the cycle path in Parque de El Toyo-Retamar is specified by its length, while the AlmerĂa-El Toyo Anthercas route is characterised by its urban and coastal sections.
Plaza del Mar, with its food and entertainment options, is near El Toyo Beach. Playa de Retamar also has a culinary connection to the sea: beach bars serve typical dishes featuring local fish. Individual facilities at the beach and in the park, route conditions, and food and entertainment options and programmes may change. Check the latest information when making specific plans.
