Isla Canela: Beach, Nature and History

At the mouth of the Río Guadiana lies the Playa de Isla Canela. In addition to swimming, this beach is suitable for windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and surfing. The extensive Playa also invites you to take long walks on the sand. This allows swimming, water sports and exercise on the beach to be combined along the same stretch of coast.

In Isla Canela, kitesurfing can be enjoyed as a water sport with a direct connection to the sea and nature. Schools and professionals are available for this sport. Favourable climatic conditions are considered characteristic of kitesurfing in Isla Canela. Likewise, extensive areas without large crowds are considered a feature of this water sport.

Another way to explore the coastal landscape is the cycling route between Isla Canela and Ayamonte. It is more than fifteen kilometres long and runs along the coast of both places. The route starts and ends at the access bridge to Ayamonte, where it connects to the town's cycle path. It is flat, has very little incline and is also easy to cycle with children. The route connects Isla Canela and Ayamonte along the coast.

Nature

The Río Carreras is a tributary of the Río Guadiana and runs through Isla Canela. Along its course, the river offers tranquil landscapes with native vegetation and diverse fauna. Outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, birdwatching and nature photography are available along the Río Carreras. In addition, paths pass through dunes and marshes, opening up different types of landscape within Isla Canela.

Isla Canela lies on an important migration route and is home to a great diversity of species. Alongside the beach, the dunes, marshes and river landscapes therefore form distinct natural areas of the resort.

Culture and History

The Torre de Canela in Isla Canela is registered as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). At the end of the 16th century, the tower was built as part of the defence system of Andalusia's Atlantic coast. The Torre de Canela has been restored and is currently used for cultural purposes.

Isla Canela also has archaeological remains from the period of Roman rule. These traces complement the historical significance of the Torre de Canela with evidence from a much earlier era.

Golf

The local offering also includes the Isla Canela Old Course. The 18-hole golf course is located by the estuary and marshes of Isla Canela, adding another dimension to the landscape between waterways and wetlands.

Events

For twelve years, a family film series has been held on the beach in Isla Canela every summer. The series offers family-friendly programming and entertainment. The screenings are therefore among the seasonal events held directly on the Playa.
