La Granada de Río-Tinto: Landscape, Hiking and Culture

La Granada de Río-Tinto lies in a transitional area between the Sierra and the Cuenca Minera. The town combines a rural character with the influence of mining, which remains visible in the landscape. The townscape is characterised by white façades and stone walls.

Landscape and Nature

La Granada de Río-Tinto has Mediterranean vegetation with holm oaks, cork oaks, pines and eucalyptus trees. These tree species form different components of the landscape. The dehesa is considered the most important ecosystem of La Granada de Río-Tinto. The town also has significant stands of cork oaks that are in an acceptable state of conservation.

The Río Tinto rises in the areas around La Granada de Río-Tinto. Nerva also claims to be the river’s source. Thus, the river’s source is associated with two towns, without resolving the competing attribution.

Hiking and Mining Landscape

The Sendero La Granada - Los Apachares is one of the designated hiking trails in La Granada de Río-Tinto. The Sierra de la Joya is also suitable for hiking. There, traditional orchards are combined with traces of the distinctive influence of mining and the landscape. The orchards and the mining influences exist alongside one another in the same landscape, making its special character visible.

Culture and Local History

The parish church Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de La Granada was built in the 16th century. In La Granada Vieja are the remains of an old chapel in the Mudéjar style. The image of Our Lady of La Granada was venerated in this chapel. Thus, the town brings together a preserved parish church and the remains of an older religious building.

Festivals and Crafts

The Fiestas de la Virgen de la Granada take place approximately around 15 August and last three or four days. The period is therefore tied to midsummer, while the date is explicitly approximate.

The XII Mercado “La Alfilla” took place in the Parque Municipal as a handicraft market. The market in La Granada de Río-Tinto presented ceramics, textiles, artistic paintings, jewellery made from resins and natural materials, antiques, woven goods and wool. The range of crafts therefore extended from processed natural materials and textiles to historical objects and artistic works.

Handmade confectionery, cured meats and cheese could also be purchased at the Mercado “La Alfilla”. In addition to handicrafts, the market therefore also included regional products.

Getting There

For the journey, the A-49 towards Seville and then the N-435 via the San Juan del Puerto–Trigueros exit are indicated. The stated route thus connects the two roads, with this exit serving as an additional reference point.
