Linares de la Sierra – Culture in the Nature Park

Linares de la Sierra is located in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Nature Park.

Nature

The Linares de la Sierra–Alájar hiking trail is linear. It is approximately 3.821 kilometres long; this figure refers to the one-way route. The duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the difficulty level is low.

The trail begins on the road to the cemetery of Linares de la Sierra. Its starting point is a few metres beyond the last houses in the town.

The route passes through dehesas and orchards, which are among the characteristic landscapes of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Nature Park.

Townscape

Almost 300 decoratively designed paved areas lie in front of the entrances to houses in Linares de la Sierra and are known as “Llanos” or “Cuadros”. Some of these areas date from the late 19th century.

There are also two-coloured paved “Alfombras” or “Llanos” in front of the entrances to the houses.

Culture and Architecture

The parish church of San Juan Bautista was completed in 1843. It is distinguished by its slender tower.

The church was designed in the Neoclassical style in the 18th century; the design is attributed to José Alvarez from Huelva.

The Plaza de Toros is attached to the church and integrated into the town. It is used for open-air theatre and other social events.

The Lavadero de Linares de la Sierra is a hydraulic complex. It includes washing areas, fountains, and livestock troughs, and ends in a circular washing area.

The Fuente Vieja has been used as a washing area since time immemorial and continues to be used today. Winding lanes lined with stone walls lead to it, running alongside orchards and enclosures.

The lanes connect the washing area, which is still in use today, with its surroundings characterised by orchards and enclosures. Their winding layout and the stone walls are likewise part of the described design of this area of the town.

The historic ensemble of Linares de la Sierra possesses significant historical, architectural, urban-planning, landscape, aesthetic, and social values.

These values justify its designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Conjunto Histórico.

Festivals and Local Specialities

San Juan Bautista is celebrated on 24 June; the patron saint’s festival lasts three days.

A Festival Taurino takes place once a year during the patron saint’s festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista.

At the Piñonate festival on Easter Sunday, traditionally made sweets are sampled. They are drizzled with honey from nearby beehives.

In Linares de la Sierra, Piñonate is a fried pastry known locally as “torcías”.

Traditionally, the Piñonate raffle takes place on Easter Sunday morning.
