Mazagón: Coast, Nature and Lighthouse

Nature

Playa del Parador features very fine, ochre-coloured sand and an impressive landscape characterised by pine groves, stretching from ancient dunes to the calm sea. As a coastal stretch, the unspoilt Playa del Parador preserves a particularly natural and original character and extends for more than 6 kilometres.

A few metres from the Parador Nacional de Turismo Cristóbal Colón is the “Pino Centenario” de Mazagón natural monument. The Pino Centenario de Mazagón is more than 300 years old.

The wider natural area around Mazagón also includes the Laguna de Las Madres and the Acantilado del Asperillo among its named landscape features. The lagoon lies in a protected natural area, while endangered animal species such as the Moorish tortoise, Lataste’s viper, the Iberian lynx and the Egyptian mongoose live in the area around the Acantilado del Asperillo.

Hiking

The Laguna de Las Madres is part of the protected natural area of Paraje Natural de las Lagunas de Palos y Las Madres. The linear hiking trail at the Laguna de Las Madres begins in the pine forest of Moguer.

Its route climbs gently and winds its way to a higher point overlooking the lagoon. The starting point of this trail is on the A-494, approximately 3 kilometres from Mazagón.

Near Mazagón, the Cuesta-Maneli hiking trail is a linear route measuring 1,174 metres in length. The trail has a low difficulty level, and the walking time is 20 minutes.

Access to the Cuesta-Maneli hiking trail is located behind the car park next to the Cuesta Maneli information point at the foot of the dune. This access point can be reached via the A-494 at kilometre 39.

A 2.5-kilometre-long wooden footbridge connects the chalet area of Bonares with Playa del Parador.

Culture

The Faro del Picacho, also known as the Faro de Mazagón, has marked the entrance to the port of Huelva since it began operating in 1902. The Faro del Picacho is an approximately 20-metre-high, octagonal tower attached to a residential building.

The beacon of the Faro del Picacho is still in operation. Cultural activities are regularly held in the building.

The Torre del Oro, known as the Torre del Loro, preserves the remains of a watchtower. This watchtower was built during the reign of Philip II to monitor and defend the coast against North African piracy.

The Puerto de Mazagón is a marina with 819 berths.
