Arriate: Trails, Festivals and Andalusian Local Culture

The Ruta Código Valentina leads through Arriate via ten stations and combines history, culture, nature and tradition with a riddle game inspired by love and the symbolic figure of Valentina.

Nature and Trails

The Sendero de la Garganta del Arroyo de la Ventilla is a moderately difficult to fairly easy hiking trail of approximately 4.5 kilometres, with a walking time of around 1 hour and 25 minutes; it runs through a gorge with small waterfalls, wooden bridges and natural pools.

The easy Arriate–Ronda stage of the GR 249.5 covers approximately 9.2 kilometres and takes 2 to 2.5 hours, leading through agricultural fields, olive groves and gently rolling hills.

Stage 23B of the Gran Senda de Málaga, suitable for cycling, connects Arriate with Ronda along a linear mountain-bike route of approximately 17.8 kilometres and medium difficulty.

The Villa de Arriate sporting event is a mountain-bike competition that has already been held 13 times; the start and finish are in the La Estacá residential area, and the routes mostly cover rural roads, trails, mountain areas around Arriate and an urban section.

The Desafío Las Cumbres offers several formats: the longer route is approximately 28 kilometres long and includes around 1,250 metres of elevation gain, while the shorter route measures approximately 15 kilometres; the circuit runs along trails, forest tracks and rural roads in the Serranía de Ronda.

The Prueba de Orientación de Arriate takes place in the town centre and nearby natural areas, where participants use a map and, in some cases, a compass to find several control points as quickly as possible.

El Laberinto de Arriate is currently considered the largest labyrinth in Spain and, in its Victorian design, the third-largest in Europe; it also includes a botanical garden with drought-tolerant xerophytic plants.

Landscape and Townscape

The Arroyo de la Ventilla hiking trail lies within the municipality of Arriate and is considered one of the most distinctive and significant sites in the province of Málaga's geological and natural heritage.

The landscape of Arriate is shaped by the Valle del Guadalcobacín, with the Sierra de las Cumbres and the Cerro de las Salinas standing out as prominent backdrops.

The Mirador de La Estacá offers panoramic views of Arriate, the Valle del Guadalcobacín, the Sierra de las Cumbres and the Cerro de las Salinas.

Further up Calle La Habana, there is another viewpoint that completes the panorama around Arriate.

At the viewpoint on Calle La Habana stands a figure of the stork Valentina in her nest, carved from a tree trunk with a chainsaw.

The town's traditionally handcrafted elements include wooden doors made locally by the local community of carpenters.

Culture and Tradition

The Festival de Cante Grande de Arriate is a recurring flamenco festival that normally takes place in the town's main square in July and has already reached its XXXIV edition.

Holy Week in Arriate has a history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries; the Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre y Santo Entierro de Cristo was founded at the end of the 16th century.

As part of the Virgen de la Aurora tradition, the Auroreros sing so-called “Salves” for the Virgin; in Andalusia, they are one of the few remaining groups of this kind and perform a particularly large variety of “Tonás”.

Mistela de Arriate is a gastronomic tradition recognised as part of Andalusia's intangible cultural heritage; the liqueur is made mainly from brandy, spices and aromatic plants and is used in Arriate at all celebrations.

The Corpus Christi festival is celebrated twice a year in Arriate due to a privilege granted by Pope Clement XIV in 1769, with the streets decorated with flowers, altars and carpets.

The procession route of the Romería del Día de la Cruz begins in Arriate, leads via Huertas Abajo to the Pinitos del Marqués and includes a break there with lunch, music and dancing for locals and visitors.

The procession of the Romería del Día de la Cruz returns to Arriate via La Estacada and Las Casas Nuevas.

This romería includes an ox-drawn cart carrying the Cruz de Mayo, followed by a procession of carts designed by associations, families or groups of friends.

The Mudéjar woodwork on the roof structure of the parish church of San Juan de Letrán dates from 1629 and was carried out by the masons and carpenters Francisco Hernández and Andrés Valverde.

The present bell tower of San Juan de Letrán is considered an important landmark in Arriate's townscape and was inaugurated on 22 August 1965.
