Cómpeta: Wine Tradition and Mountain Trails

Nature

The Casa de la Mina-Pradillos hiking trail follows the historic mule track of Puerto de Cómpeta, which runs between Granada and the coast. Several landscaped walking paths lead through the town of Cómpeta. At Puerto del Collao, a viewpoint is situated at an altitude of 890 metres. From this viewpoint, there are views of the peaks of the Sierra Almijara. The nearby Mediterranean Sea is also part of this panorama.

The landscape appears on several scales: the hiking trail refers to the connection between Granada and the coast, the walking paths remain within Cómpeta, and the viewpoint opens up views from the heights across mountain peaks and sea. In this way, local paths, the historic route and the panorama stand alongside one another as distinct natural features.

Culture

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres occupies both floors of a former 19th-century Guardia Civil barracks. The museum displays old agricultural and economic implements. Traditional costumes are also exhibited. These are complemented by cultural, artistic and folk expressions from the region’s cultural heritage.

The museum thus brings together a historic exhibition venue, specific agricultural and economic implements, and traditional costumes with broader cultural, artistic and folk forms. The Paseo complements this presentation with mosaics, a poem and local history.

History

At the Paseo de las Tradiciones, ceramic mosaics depict traditional crafts. A poem is also among the elements displayed there. The Paseo also presents a brief outline of Cómpeta’s history. The parish church in Cómpeta has a 16th-century structure. Its design includes a Mudejar roof and a Mudejar coffered ceiling. Two murals in the church were created by the painter Paco Hernández.

The parish church carries this historical dimension into a building in the town: its Mudejar elements belong to the 16th-century structure, while the two murals add a named artist. On the Paseo, traditional crafts, a poem and local history appear alongside one another in the same sequence.

Cuisine

Traditional dishes from Cómpeta include Potaje de Hinojos, Migas, Ensalada Arriera and fried pumpkin. Cómpeta is part of the Ruta del Sol y del Vino through the Axarquía. This route highlights artisanal wine production.

Noche del Vino has been celebrated as a festival for more than 30 years. The festival is intended to promote Cómpeta and its typical products. Noche del Vino highlights typical products such as wine, raisins and honey. The morning feast includes Migas, baked cod, grapes and salad. At Noche del Vino, the grape harvest was staged on 15 August. The staging included transporting the grapes to the wine press and treading the grapes in the Plaza de la Vendimia.

The culinary traditions place dishes alongside regional wine production and a festival whose programme publicly presents the grape harvest. The products and foods mentioned make different components of Noche del Vino visible.
