Culture and History

The historic centre of Mojácar features white, terraced houses adapted to the terrain; winding, steep streets characterise the town centre. The Puerta de la Ciudad was the original entrance to Mojácar and was rebuilt in the 16th century over an earlier Arab gate in the town wall. The Iglesia de Santa María was probably built in 1560 on the site of an earlier Arab mosque and served both as a place of worship and as a fortress.

The Torre Atalaya del Pirulico is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest and is listed in the General Catalogue of the Historical Heritage of Andalusia. La Fuente de Mojácar has twelve outlets at the front and one at the side; formerly, it was a central place for social life as well as for agriculture and livestock farming in the town.

Archaeology and Museums

Mojácar La Vieja preserves visible archaeological remains from the Andalusian period, when early Islamic communities settled the hill. A large cistern is located at the summit, while terraced dwellings extend along the southern and south-eastern slopes. The settlement included a castle with two areas and a wall with fifteen towers.

The Casa Museo La Canana presents a house from Mojácar dating from the first half of the 20th century, with more than 200 m² of exhibition space and authentic contemporary objects. The Museo de Mojácar is the municipality’s museographic collection in Calle Cuesta de la Fuente. The Centro de arte «Mirador del Castillo» is an art centre in Calle Cuesta del Castillo in Mojácar.

Landscape and Coast

The Mirador de la Plaza Nueva offers views of a valley bordered by the Sierra de Cabrera, Bédar and Almagrera mountain ranges, as well as of the Río Aguas near Mojácar La Vieja. The outdoor platform of the Faro de Mojácar provides views over a large part of the Levante Almeriense coast.

Mojácar has 17 km of beaches, including equipped and accessible beaches with Blue Flag status as well as unspoilt coves. Playa de Marina de la Torre lies next to the protected lagoon of the Río Aguas. The specially protected Cala del Sombrerico combines volcanic rock and sand, permits naturism and has no visitor facilities.

Markets and Everyday Life

An accessible route through the historic centre includes a lift connecting the upper part of the town with the municipal car parks below. Mojácar’s Wednesday market offers, among other things, vegetables, fruit, fish and handicrafts.

El Rastrillo is a traditional open-air Sunday morning market with books, paintings, beadwork, antiques and second-hand items. The Indalo is a protective symbol associated with Mojácar that can still be seen in local handicrafts and on house walls.

Culture and Leisure

The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos commemorate the negotiated and peaceful handover of the towns of the comarca to the Catholic Monarchs at the end of the 15th century; during the celebrations, Kábilas and Cuarteles parade through the town in colourful costumes. Club Marina Golf Mojácar has an 18-hole golf course and a golf school.
