Oria: Sierra Landscape, Architecture and Traditions

Natural Environment

The municipality of Oria encompasses a highly varied and contrasting natural landscape in the Sierra de Oria. The landscape is rugged and characterised by great biodiversity; it also features numerous interesting geological formations.

The contrasts of the Sierra de Oria are therefore reflected both in its landscape and in its geological character. This natural environment includes rugged terrain, a diverse range of animal and plant life, and various geological features.

Architectural History

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a late Baroque church with a cruciform floor plan and three naves. Construction of the basilica began on 16 March 1767 and continued until 13 May 1779. In 1999, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category and placed under protection. The main altar area contains a mural by Pedro Cervantes dating from 1960.

The basilica therefore brings together architectural features, a clearly documented construction period and a mural added at a later date. Its protected status as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category is also part of its history.

Historic Sites

The Ermita Vieja was built in the 16th century on the remains of an earlier mosque. The Ermita de San Gregorio dates from the 17th century and is distinguished by its Mudéjar style. The Casa de la Tercia dates from the 18th century. It bears witness to the period when Oria belonged to the Marquisate of Los Vélez.

The three buildings reflect different historical layers: the Ermita Vieja preserves its connection to the remains of an earlier mosque, San Gregorio represents the Mudéjar style, and the Casa de la Tercia recalls Oria’s affiliation with the Marquisate of Los Vélez.

The grounds of the Alcazaba were refurbished, access was improved and a viewpoint was built.

Routes and Traditions

The Chirivel–Oria BTT stage leads into the Sierra de Oria and ends in the town of Oria. For centuries, the Fuente de la Polaca has been a traditional meeting place. Women from the town and surrounding area collected water, washed clothes and rested there.

The stage connects the Sierra de Oria with its destination in Oria, while the Fuente de la Polaca preserves a centuries-old connection with the daily lives of women from the town and its surrounding area.

In Oria, San Blas is still celebrated with a mass and a procession. The celebration also includes the blessing of the rosco pastries typical of Oria.

Crafts and Products

Confitería La Polaca in Oria was founded in 1875. It produces traditional sweets and baked goods, mostly by hand. Since 1969, Productos Cárnicos El Parrita has produced ham and cured meats in Oria as artisan products. These products are made using traditional family recipes.

Oria is therefore home to two distinct craft-based product sectors with a long local history: Confitería La Polaca specialises in sweets and baked goods, while Productos Cárnicos El Parrita produces ham and cured meats according to traditional family recipes.
