Poblado Sancti Petri: Castle, Coast and Fishing Heritage

Poblado de Sancti Petri has a fishing heritage. It is connected with almadraba fishing and the catching of bluefin tuna. Until 1973, it was home to both fishermen’s houses and a cannery. That year, almadraba fishing in the area was discontinued.

Coast

Playa de Sancti-Petri is suitable for windsurfing. This is particularly true of the area near the fishing harbour of Sancti-Petri.

Puerto Deportivo Sancti Petri offers sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Panoramic cruises and kayak hire are also available there.

The crossing to Isla de Sancti Petri departs from Puerto Deportivo Sancti Petri. You can take a boat or hire a kayak for this crossing.

Sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are possible on Caño de Sancti Petri. Diving, kitesurfing and sport fishing are also among the activities available there.

Nature

The Paraje Natural Marismas de Sancti Petri nature area is located in the Bay of Cádiz. It is an extensive seawater channel. The channel extends inland between the low-lying areas of San Fernando and Sancti Petri.

The Marismas de Sancti Petri are saltwater wetlands. They are home to numerous birds and marine species. The wetlands also feature rich halophytic vegetation.

The southern section of Playa de Sancti Petri is known as Punta de Piedras because of its rocky seabed. Behind Playa de Sancti Petri, a protected dune system connects with a coastal pine forest.

Culture

Castillo de Sancti Petri stands on the islet of Sancti Petri. The islet lies opposite Poblado de Sancti Petri. Castillo de Sancti Petri was built in the 18th century.

It can be visited independently. A guided visit is also possible.

Templo de Hércules is a small natural balcony and viewpoint in Poblado de Sancti Petri. From there, you can see Castillo de Sancti Petri.

A walk through the old fishing village of Sancti Petri brings the history of bluefin tuna fishing to life. The walk also brings an old culinary culture to life.

Routes

The “Rutas playa La Barrosa y Sancti Petri” route ends at the former almadraba fishing village of Sancti Petri. Its destination lies at the mouth of the main channel that feeds the marshes.

At low tide, this route offers the possibility of following the beach. Alternatively, the path leads through the pine forests of La Barrosa.

The “Chiclana, de Origen Fenicio” route leads from the beaches of La Barrosa and Sancti Petri over Cerro del Castillo. It extends to the Nueva Gadeira | Espacio Arqueológico archaeological site. Along the way, it brings the traces of the ancient Phoenicians on the coast back to life.

The route includes ten waypoints. These are connected with Melqart, the patron god of seafarers and merchants.
