Nature

Villaluenga del Rosario is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The natural park features contrasting limestone reliefs. These reliefs have been shaped by the geological history of the natural park.

This geological influence is also evident in the different forms of the landscape: on the one hand, there are the reliefs of the natural park; on the other, the underground karst formations and the enclosed valley of the Republicano.

The Sima del Republicano is a cave with impressive karst formations. Its documented depth is 1,100 metres. The Poljé del Republicano is an enclosed valley formed by the dissolution of limestone. Its drainage outlet is in the Sima del Republicano.

The two landscape forms therefore belong to the same geological context: the limestone forms the valley, while the dissolution of the rock determines the karst formations and the underground drainage outlet.

About one kilometre from the starting point, a car park and the beginning of the hiking trail to the Llanos del Republicano are located on the site of a former quarry. The starting point and the beginning of the trail are therefore on the site of this former quarry; the distance is given as approximately one kilometre.

Trails

The Ruta Villaluenga is a recommended route within the municipality of Villaluenga del Rosario. You can complete this route on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The trail passes through a forest with cork oaks, holm oaks and diverse vegetation.

The route thus combines several forms of transport with a landscape in which cork oaks, holm oaks and other vegetation occur together. It remains within the municipality of Villaluenga del Rosario.

Culture

The Plaza de Toros of Villaluenga del Rosario was built on existing rocks. Instead of being completely circular, it has a polygonal geometric shape.

The building's distinctive form results from two clearly identified features: the existing rock as its foundation and the polygonal layout instead of a completely circular shape.

The Iglesia San Miguel Arcángel is a Baroque church next to the Alameda of Villaluenga del Rosario. It has a simple Renaissance pediment.

The former Iglesia de El Salvador on Calle Torre dates from 1722. Napoleonic troops burned it down. Today, the former church building is used as a cemetery.

The museum therefore focuses not only on the finished food product. The presentation ranges from its origins and the role of cheese in the Mediterranean diet to the process by which it is made.

At the Queso Payoyo factory in Villaluenga del Rosario, visitors can taste cheese directly. The tasting includes cheese made from goat's milk, sheep's milk or a mixture of both types of milk. Visitors can buy cheese in the factory shop.

The tasting therefore includes the three milk bases mentioned in the text: goat's milk, sheep's milk and a mixture of both. The factory shop complements this offering by providing the opportunity to buy cheese on site.

For several years, Villaluenga del Rosario has hosted the Feria del Queso Artesanal de Andalucía. The cheese museum, the Queso Payoyo factory and the Feria del Queso Artesanal de Andalucía thus each offer their own insight into the origins, tasting, sale and public presentation of cheese.
