Zahora: Beaches, Dunes and Faro de Trafalgar

Nature and Coast

Playa de Zahora has coarse-grained, golden sand. There are also different coastal profiles. The end of the beach closest to the Tómbolo de Trafalgar is undeveloped. There is a large dune system with dense vegetation cover.

The Tómbolo de Trafalgar is designated a natural monument. It is a sandstone island between the bays of Conil and Barbate (Cádiz). The island is connected to the coast by a double, transverse tombolo. The connection consists of loose sand.

Punta de Trafalgar combines fine-sand dunes, extensive beaches and a rocky area. The lighthouse stands on this area. Punta de Trafalgar is designated both an Andalusian wetland and a natural monument.

The coastal landscape thus connects Zahora Beach with the dune system at the Tómbolo and the rocky area of Punta de Trafalgar. The double tombolo of loose sand forms the geological connection between the sandstone island and the coast. Sand, vegetation cover, rocks and sea therefore come together in the described landscape areas.

Culture and History

Faro de Trafalgar was built between 1857 and 1860. It can only be viewed from the outside. From the viewpoint, the view extends across the cape. It also extends over the adjacent beaches. These beaches include Los Caños de Meca, Zahora and El Palmar.

The road to the lighthouse at Punta de Trafalgar is closed to vehicular traffic. The closure allows access to the beach on foot. It also allows access to the path around the lighthouse.

The Battle of Trafalgar took place in the area of the Tómbolo de Trafalgar in 1805. Anfiteatro Zahora is located in Barbate (Cádiz). The address is Pago Zahora 317.

Activities

Playa de Zahora is suitable for windsurfing. It is also suitable for sailing, surfing and fishing.

The hiking trail is called Sendero Cabo de Trafalgar. It connects Cabo de Trafalgar with the town centre of Conil de la Frontera. Its route runs along the beaches and watchtowers on the coast of the municipalities of Barbate, Vejer de la Frontera and Conil de la Frontera.

Sendero Cabo de Trafalgar offers an interesting landscape. This landscape includes dune systems and characteristic vegetation. Along the entire coastline, the path offers impressive sea panoramas.

In spring, the annual migration of orcas to the Mediterranean takes place. The orcas pursue bluefin tuna. During this period, a walk along the beaches of Zahora and Los Caños de Meca can be a good opportunity to observe orcas.
