Culture and History

The Castillo de Viandar in El Hoyo is part of the cultural heritage of the Alto Guadiato mining landscape. The castle is located approximately 500 metres north of El Hoyo. It stands on the 774-metre-high Alto del Castillo del Hoyo. It was probably built during the Caliphate period. Its construction served to protect the approaches to Córdoba from the northwest.

Nature and Water

El Hoyo is surrounded by mountains, dehesas, and reservoirs. Built in 1910, the Fuente de la Herrumbrosa is integrated into a landscape around the hamlet. This landscape is characterised by holm oaks and streams. The spring has a shaded rest area. The rest area is intended for people travelling through the area. The Fuente de la Herrumbrosa was used for consumption. It was attributed with medicinal properties.

The iron-rich spring in the area around El Hoyo is also popularly known as Fuente Agria. The Eucalyptus de la Fuente Agria de El Hoyo forms a platform with its spreading trunk base. This platform has a circumference of almost 16 metres. The tree is an Eucalyptus camaldulensis. It is listed in the Andalusian Inventory of Notable Trees and Tree Groups. In the province of Córdoba, it is one of two trees catalogued as notable eucalyptus trees. The name Fuente Agria refers to the properties of the iron-containing water. Together with the eucalyptus, the spring forms a distinct section within the surroundings characterised by mountains, dehesas, and reservoirs. The combination of the spring, shaded rest area, and extraordinary eucalyptus encompasses both built and natural features of the area. In addition to the water and streams, holm oaks, dehesas, and reservoirs therefore also shape the landscape around El Hoyo.

Routes around the Hamlet

The Ruta El Hoyo begins in the hamlet of El Hoyo in Belmez, Córdoba. The route is 3.9 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

Festivals and Gastronomy

The Fiestas Mayores take place in El Hoyo. They are held in honour of the Virgen de Los Reyes. The Feria Gastronómica de El Hoyo is an annual event. It is aimed at local residents and visitors. Typical products and the town's traditional cuisine are presented at this event.

The feria includes tastings of typical tapas and traditional cured meats. Vino de Pitarra and homemade sweets are also sampled. A tasting of migas takes place at the Caseta Municipal. The selection mentioned therefore ranges from savoury regional products and tapas, through the local Vino de Pitarra, to sweet dishes. Migas is mentioned as a separate tasting within the feria at the Caseta Municipal.
