Montilla – Museums, Festivals and Routes

The Sala Expositiva Gran Capitán is a permanent museographic exhibition. Its subject is Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Gran Capitán.

Culture and History

The Museo Garnelo displays the largest collection of paintings by José Garnelo y Alda. The museum is housed in a 19th-century mansion. This mansion is known as the Casa de las Aguas.

San Juan de Ávila lived in the Casa Oratorio de San Juan de Ávila during the last 17 years of his life. The Museo Histórico Local de Montilla was established to showcase Montilla’s archaeological heritage. The museum includes a collection of 27 historic ship models.

The Inca Garcilaso lived in the Casa-Museo del Inca Garcilaso for 30 years.

The cultural attractions therefore range from a permanent museographic exhibition, paintings and a historic mansion to the two Casas associated with San Juan de Ávila and Inca Garcilaso. The archaeological museum complements these historic sites with a collection of its own; the 27 ship models give it a clearly defined exhibition feature. In Montilla, individual personalities, the history of the town and specific collection objects are all brought into focus.

Festivals

Montilla’s Semana Santa is recognised in Andalusia as a festival of tourist interest. Its history dates back to the first half of the 16th century.

Montilla’s Fiesta de la Vendimia was established in 1955. It is considered a festival of national tourist interest. During the traditional Fiesta de la Vendimia, the courtyards of the town’s wineries and the lagares of the Sierra de Montilla are opened to the public.

The two festivals represent different historical periods and public traditions: Semana Santa dates back to the first half of the 16th century, while the Fiesta de la Vendimia was established in 1955. During the Vendimia, the open courtyards of the town’s wineries and the lagares of the Sierra de Montilla are also part of the celebrations.

Routes

The Ruta de las Fuentes Históricas begins at the Mirador de la Escuchuela, a natural viewpoint overlooking the landscape of the province of Córdoba, with the Sierra Morena in the background. The route includes one variant with six springs and another with eight.

The Ruta Monumental offers guided tours by prior reservation. These tours are open to individuals and groups.

The Ruta de los Murales can be visited independently. It is also suitable for group visits or self-guided visits.

The routes therefore offer different ways of visiting: the Ruta de las Fuentes Históricas leads from a natural viewpoint to six or eight springs, the Ruta Monumental focuses on guided tours booked in advance, and the Ruta de los Murales can be visited individually, in a group or independently.

Getting There

The main road access to Montilla is the A-45 motorway. Montilla has a bus station with regular connections to the municipalities in the south of the province of Córdoba. There are also regular connections to the main Andalusian provincial capitals.

Travel to Montilla is therefore documented both by road via the A-45 and via the bus station, with its regular connections within the province of Córdoba and to major Andalusian provincial capitals.
