The Castillo de Almodóvar stands on the Cerro de la Floresta, a fortress built by the Arabs in 740 with nine towers, including the Torre del Homenaje. Both self-guided and guided tours are available at the Castillo de Almodóvar. During a guided tour, Mr Men Rodríguez de Sanabria – a steward and loyal knight of King Pedro I or, in his place, Queen Doña Blanca – accompanies visitors through the rooms of the fortress and involves them in the experience.

On the banks of the Guadalquivir in Almodóvar del Río lie the remains of a former landing place, which may be of Roman origin and is known as the Portus Romano. The Portus Romano was excavated and restored for tourism. Its access routes have been prepared, and the site can be reached on foot.

Culture

The Exposición Arqueológica Municipal covers the period from antiquity to the Islamic era and displays, among other things, Iberian votive offerings, amphora handles with stamps, terra sigillata, Roman coins and Andalusian pottery. The exhibits also include a reconstructed Neolithic hut. The exhibition of sewing machines and bullfighting posters comprises more than 500 posters from 1887 to 1970. It also features nearly 200 sewing machines, the oldest of which dates from 1860.

The Museo Etnológico presents the history of agriculture and livestock farming in Almodóvar del Río and in the province of Córdoba and displays items from the 13th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the development of mechanisation and the Industrial Revolution. The museum contains more than 4,000 exhibits in total. Its collection has been continuously expanded since 1970 and includes items from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario acquired its current appearance after its last renovation in 1975. Its Baroque portal features a straight termination and a broken pediment, a niche flanked by volutes, three pinnacles and a bell gable. At the beginning of the 20th century, the ermita was used as a school. It is probably dated to the 18th century; the present chapel was presumably built at that time.

The Ruta del Casco Histórico is a tour through the historic civil and religious buildings, as well as the important streets and squares of Almodóvar del Río; the stated duration is more than 30 minutes. The tour also leads to the Exposición Arqueológica Municipal.
