Between Sierra Morena and the Guadiato Valley

Espiel combines rocky landforms, Mediterranean woodland, reservoirs and open landscapes in the Guadiato Valley. This makes it possible to combine different observation focuses during a stay: the landscape reveals itself through the changing interplay of wooded areas, bodies of water and open expanses.

Forest Trails and Viewpoints

The Sendero del Calatraveño leads through Mediterranean woodland typical of the Sierra Morena, with rockroses, cork oaks and planted pine trees. It leads to the area around the Molino de Los Pilones, where amphibians and nesting waterfowl can be observed.

From the Sendero del Calatraveño, the Antenas del Calatraveño offer wide views over the Valle de los Pedroches and the Sierra Morena. A route in Espiel also leads to the Mirador de los Pinos. The two named destinations offer different focuses for observing the landscape.

Defensive Architecture and Historical Traces

The Castillo de El Vacar in El Vacar (Espiel) is classified as defensive cultural heritage. An approximately quadrangular fortified area surrounded by thick walls remains preserved at the castle; its sides measure 65, 59.5, 50.1 and 49.5 metres. It has four corner towers and four additional towers on each side. The dimensions and arrangement of the towers make the geometry of the fortified area concrete.

The Ruinas visigodas del Cerro del Germo, also known as Cerro del Germo or El Germo, are a monument registered as a B.I.C. in the municipality of Espiel; the registration dates from 3 June 1931. According to the available documentation, the Puente Romano de Espiel visible today dates from 1731. There may previously have been an older bridge at this site, which was destroyed or severely damaged by flooding of the Guadiato River.

Romería and the Memory of Mining

The Romería de la Virgen de la Estrella takes place on the night of the last Sunday in April. A procession with floats and riders leads from the Paseo in Espiel to the ermita three kilometres away. After the offering and the Mass, hornazo, a typical dish from Espiel, is served there. The fixed date combines a night-time event, a procession and regional cuisine.

A route in Espiel offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of the town through five scenes. The scenes refer to coal mining, Espiel’s past as a mining district and a collective memory to be reclaimed. In this way, the route draws attention to the historical importance of mining and its remembrance in the town.

Starry Skies and Climbing Routes

Espiel has privileged night skies designated as a Starlight Reserve, making them suitable for stargazing. In the La V climbing sector, there are climbing routes up to 140 metres long.
