Culture and History

At the Cerro del Castillo de Santaella archaeological site, intensive settlement from the Late Bronze Age to the present day has been documented, including medieval and modern phases.

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Santaella is located in the Casa de la Cultura, Calle Antonio Palma 27, 14546 Santaella (Córdoba). It comprises the Archaeology and Ethnography departments, supplemented by Palaeontology and Mineralogy.

The Castillo de Santaella is a medieval castle with a fortification wall and a tower of Muslim origin dating from the 12th century. The surviving parts include an angled entrance, two large cisterns, several sections of wall around the arms courtyard, and a square keep.

The Iglesia de la Asunción is a large Renaissance temple and is considered Santaella’s most representative monument.

The Santuario Virgen del Valle is considered one of the finest Baroque buildings in Córdoba and Andalusia.

The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz has been documented since the 16th century and, despite a more recent rebuilding, preserves its original single-nave layout.

Santaella’s Barrio Bajo has narrow streets and whitewashed houses.

The Fuente del Pilón supplied the town of Santaella in 1676. The various fountains in the municipality of Santaella form part of its historical, artistic and natural heritage and are considered attractive places that can promote rural tourism.

Festivals and Traditions

Santaella’s Semana Santa begins with a Stations of the Cross procession through Barrio Bajo on Passion Saturday, during which a crucifix is carried on people’s shoulders and deep drums are played.

Santaella’s Semana Santa includes a procession of the brotherhoods that have not yet held their processions, without religious images and with only Nazarenos and marching bands.

The Feria de Ntra. Sra. del Valle begins in September and forms the highlight of the town’s main festivities.

Nature and Routes

The Laguna del Donadío is listed in the official inventory of Andalusia’s wetlands under code IHA613008, covering an area of 13.01 hectares.

The Ruta de la Laguna del Donadío is an interpretive trail that follows rural paths between olive groves and wheat fields.

The Ruta de Las Fuentes is a six-kilometre linear trail in Santaella.

The route can be used year-round on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

It leads to the Fuente de la Cañada Jardín and the Fuente del Pilón.

Gastronomy

Santaella’s traditional dishes include white chickpea stew, migas, salmorejo and gazpacho blanco.

The surrounding area’s agriculture and good wines are considered defining foundations of Santaella’s gastronomy.
