Villafranca de Córdoba between pine forest and cultural history
Cultural History in Villafranca de Córdoba
In Villafranca de Córdoba, the Torre y Ermita de San Miguel rises above the remains of the former parish church of Santa Marina, which was built at the end of the 14th century. The building has Gothic-Mudejar characteristics and features later Renaissance and Baroque alterations. Its construction period and surviving details offer two perspectives for observation.
Fuente Agria and the Pine Forest
The Parque Periurbano Fuente Agria covers 79.69 hectares and is located near the town centre of Villafranca de Córdoba. It is named after an iron-rich spring and is predominantly populated by stone pines of the Pinus pinea species. The Fuente Agria recreational area on the banks of the Arroyo Pontejón has tables, toilets and parking spaces.
Architecture and Historic Routes
The town's history also includes the Casa Palacio de los Duques de Medinaceli and the Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Marina. The Casa Palacio de los Duques de Medinaceli was built in the last third of the 18th century as the residence of the administrator, on the site of the former Palacio de los Comendadores de Calatrava. The main altar of the Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Marina was taken from the church of San Francisco y San Eulogio in Córdoba and transferred there.
The Ruta Patrimonial de Villafranca de Córdoba, designed by the Ayuntamiento, leads to architectural elements dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The route thus connects named buildings and historical periods within the town without combining the individual eras into a unified architectural history.
Walking Paths along the Guadalquivir
The Puente de Hierro was built at the beginning of the 20th century to transport the goods required for the construction of the Embalse de Guadalmellato reservoir. From there, the walking path leads to the Parque Fluvial. The route is accessible with few barriers, 1.72 km long and runs along the Guadalquivir; its features include adapted walkways and a birdwatching point.
Route through the Pine Forest
A second route leads from Fuente Agria to the Mirador de aves. This route is 4.84 km long, involves 179 metres of ascent and passes through pine forest. The two routes therefore differ in length and route profile. Different route lengths help with stage planning. When planning a hike, length and ascent can be considered as two separate figures, keeping the route profile visible alongside the distance.
Leisure and Annual Festival Date
Aquasierra is described as the only water park in the province of Córdoba. Karting is practised as a leisure activity in Villafranca de Córdoba, and water sports are also practised on the river. La Gran Huevada is celebrated in Villafranca de Córdoba every year on 14 May, the eve of San Isidro Labrador.
