Bujalance: Alcazaba, Church Architecture and Olive Oil

The old town of Bujalance was designated a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico and placed under heritage protection in 1983. The Castillo Alcazaba was built in the 10th century under the caliph Abd al-Rahman III.

Culture

The Castillo Alcazaba has a rectangular layout and covers approximately 3,000 square metres. Seven towers once protected the Castillo Alcazaba. Today, only the Torre de la Mazmorra and the Torre de las Palomas remain. The Museo Histórico Local “El Hombre y su Medio” combines a historical and archaeological exhibition with the history of the local environment.

The parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady is known as the “Catedral de la Campiña” because of its imposing dimensions. The tower of the Church of the Assumption is called the “Pisa de Andalucía” because of its tilt. The “Arquitectura del Sol” invites visitors to admire Bujalance’s religious architecture. The naves are aligned with the local horizon point of sunrise or sunset on the feast day of the respective church’s patron saint. The two names highlight different features of the same church building: “Catedral de la Campiña” refers to its dimensions, while “Pisa de Andalucía” refers to the tower’s tilt.

Cycling

The Alto Guadalquivir mountain-biking circuit is approved by the Andalusian Cycling Federation and comprises eight stages. The first stage runs from Bujalance to Cañete de las Torres. The eighth stage begins in El Carpio and ends in Bujalance.
