Torrecampo: Archaeology, Churches and Trails

At La Nava, also known as Casilla de la Lata, are the remains of a Roman settlement and medieval tombs carved into the rock.

Archaeological Sites

Haza de las Animas (I) is a medieval settlement with a necropolis containing rock-cut tombs. La Torre is an early medieval settlement with Visigothic archaeological remains and a funerary inscription for the priest Rufo dated to 950. At Las Coronadas are the remains of a Roman villa, evidenced by scattered finds. Las Valquemadas consists of three tombs carved into granite rock.

Churches and Historic Houses

The Iglesia de San Sebastián is a Gothic-Mudéjar religious building dating from the 14th century. It has three naves and three rectangular apses covered by star vaults.

The Ermita de Santa María de Gracia dates from the 13th or 14th century and has paintings on the walls and on the dome of the chancel. The Ermita de Jesús has Gothic origins and features floral paintings on its dome.

The Casa-Museo Posada del Moro houses collections on archaeology, painting, sculpture, and household objects. It is located in a former 15th-century inn on the Camino Real and has a Renaissance portal from the early 16th century. The Casa-Museo Posada del Moro is currently undergoing restoration.

The Pósito is a vaulted building dating from the 17th to 18th centuries that is used as an exhibition hall following its restoration. The parish archive of the Iglesia de San Sebastián preserves documents dating from 1550 onward. The Casa de la Inquisición is one of Torrecampo’s most notable houses; it features granite portals and lintels.

Routes and Landscape

The peri-urban route is an easy circular trail. The route is 2.6 km long and has an average gradient of 1.5%.

From Puerto del Mochuelo on the A-435, the peri-urban route offers magnificent panoramic views of the region. The road section of the peri-urban route leads to the Ermita de la Virgen de Veredas, where the pilgrimage is celebrated on 1 May.

A section between the Molino de la Jurada and the Ermita de la Virgen de Veredas runs along the bank of the watercourse.

Surroundings and Regional Trails

Castillo de Almogábar is 10 km from Torrecampo in the direction of Conquista. In the area around Torrecampo, it stands on a hill and today consists only of a few wall and stone remains.

Torrecampo is part of the Ruta de las Siete Villas. As one of 17 municipalities, Torrecampo belongs to the Los Pedroches Starlight Reserve.

Traditional Specialties

Cachorreñas are one of Torrecampo’s typical dishes. Melocotonada is prepared in summer and is considered a drink similar to sangria.
