Hiking and Nature
The Sendero de la Luca begins on Calle San Marcos in Carcabuey and is a moderate circular hiking trail approximately 7.8 kilometres long.
The Sendero Puente Califal is an easy circular hiking trail approximately 7.3 kilometres long, with a walking time of around 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The Sendero de la Fuente Dura is a moderate circular hiking trail approximately 9.9 kilometres long; the walking time is around 3 hours and 20 minutes.
Carcabuey is one of the municipalities whose territory is part of the protected Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park.
The Parque Ornitológico is freely accessible all year round. The observation centre has five viewing points, one-way mirrors, feeding stations and supporting materials.
Along the route, there are also information panels with QR codes for listening to bird calls, as well as a natural pond that promotes the biodiversity of the area.
History and Religious Architecture
The Castillo de Carcabuey rises on the Cerro del Castillo, a rocky outcrop above the town.
Archaeological remains on the Cerro del Castillo provide evidence of human settlement in all historical periods up to at least the Middle Bronze Age.
Throughout its history, the castle served as a strategically and militarily important site for controlling the routes through the Subbética, including the connections between five Andalusian provinces.
The Iglesia de San Marcos was probably built in the final years of the 16th century. An entry in the marriage register from 1594 indicates that it already existed at that time.
The Iglesia de la Asunción stands at the foot of the Cerro del Castillo on elevated ground; from there, the entire town can be seen.
The Museo Histórico Municipal de Carcabuey is divided into seven colour-coded rooms dedicated to different historical periods.
Traditions and Routes
In Carcabuey, the Toro de Cuerda is a tradition that has been practised since time immemorial.
During this tradition, runners race through the streets ahead of a bull whose horns are connected by a rope.
The celebration attracts thousands of people from across the region and from other provinces.
The Ruta TurÃstica del Toro de Cuerda is a walking route along the course taken by the runners when the bull is released. Several information panels with QR codes link to videos about the respective sections of the route.
Festivals and Gastronomy
The Matanza Tradicional usually takes place in Carcabuey every year during the Constitution Bridge holiday around 8 December.
It offers insights into the traditional production of cured meats and the opportunity to taste them. There are also tastings of typical confectionery, quince products, oils and cheese.
The Almazara de la Subbetica offers oil tastings, guided tours of the olive mill, and the sale of olive oil, quinces and products made from them.
On Easter Sunday, the Pascua de los Moraos takes place, a carnival-like festival that highlights grotesque and absurd forms of expression.
Mountain Biking
There are two mountain bike routes in Carcabuey, named Puerto Escaño and Sierra de los Pollos.
