Culture and History

Human presence on the Cerro del Castillo in Aguilar de la Frontera has been reliably documented since the Bronze Age. The site remained strategically important to Roman and Islamic civilisations. The Puerta de Espejo dates from the last third of the 15th century. It is one of the few surviving remains of the medieval city walls of Aguilar de la Frontera.

The Centro de Interpretación del Paisaje y la Historia de Aguilar de la Frontera, or CIPHAF for short, is part of the network of tourist development centres of the Ruta Montilla Moriles and the Red Vinárea. At CIPHAF, a multidisciplinary tour combines archaeology and landscape. The centre also offers themed visits focusing on history, archaeology and landscape.

Nature and Birdlife

Laguna de Zóñar has been protected since 1984. It is home to significant communities of wintering and resident waterbirds. Around four kilometres from Aguilar de la Frontera, the Laguna de Zóñar visitor centre offers exhibitions, outdoor areas for relaxation and a viewpoint for observing Laguna de Zóñar.

Wine

The Ruta de Arqueólogo is located in Aguilar de la Frontera. Its guided visit includes the room with old vintage bottles and the craft workshop. The tour also includes the ageing room, tasting room and private archaeological museum. The route includes a tasting of six wines and four traditionally produced vinegars.

Lagar Los Frailes invites visitors to taste wines directly from the barrel and learn about the production process of its full-bodied wines.

Festivals

Holy Week in Aguilar de la Frontera was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1999. It includes 18 Passion brotherhoods.

Candelaria is celebrated in Aguilar de la Frontera every year on 2 February. A large public bonfire is part of the celebrations in Plaza de San José.

During Corpus Christi, a solemn Eucharistic procession passes through the streets. They are decorated with flowerpots, cloths and street altars. The procession route is covered with reeds and rosemary.

The Feria Real takes place near the ruins of the former Castillo de Poley.
