Fuente del Conde: Waterways, Hiking and Traditional Festivals

Fuente del Conde is one of the most significant expressions of Iznájar’s water culture.

Culture

The Fuente de la Mujea can be reached from the centre of Fuente del Conde by heading south from the church along the Camino de la Mujea, which is also called Camino de la Mulata. At the first junction with the carril de la Fuente del Conde, continue west; after approximately 1,300 metres, the spring is located beside a large holm oak.

The Fuente de la Mujea is an element of Fuente del Conde’s traditional architecture with ethnological value, associated with agro-pastoral and social activities.

The public fountains of Fuente del Conde include the Fuente de Magán.

Further destinations: Belalcázar, Carcabuey, Campo-Nubes, Ochavillo del Río, La Rambla, Cardeña, Torrecampo, Ribera Baja.

Landscape

Fuente del Conde lies at the foot of the Sierra de Campoagro.

The Cruz de Magán is a viewpoint that crowns Fuente del Conde.

The small chapel at the Cruz de Magán is associated with an ancient Iberian sanctuary that is believed to have stood at the same location.

The caves on the hillside near Fuente del Conde were inhabited during the Neolithic period and later eras.

Some holm oaks near Fuente del Conde are considered notable trees of the municipality because of their size, shape and age.

The church of Fuente del Conde was begun around 1985 and completed in May 1994.

Routes

The “Sendero de Fuente del Conde” is officially certified by the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo.

Most of the “Sendero de Fuente del Conde” runs along concrete and unpaved roads.

The “Sendero de Fuente del Conde” is considered a hike suitable for the whole family.

The path climbs the Sierra de Campo Agro to an altitude of 929 metres.

As a circular route, the “Sendero de Fuente del Conde” is approximately 5.5 kilometres long.

The “Ruta del agua de Fuente del Conde” links the most important ethnographic elements of Fuente del Conde associated with water.

The route is approximately 9.3 kilometres long and is suitable for hiking and cycling.

Traditions

Fuente del Conde celebrates the Feast of the Holy Cross from 1 to 3 May with a traditional pilgrimage.

This festival includes a procession during which residents place cash on the platform of the processional float as the crucified Christ passes by.

The Christ associated with the Fuente del Conde festival is kept in the hermitage on Cerro de Magán.

The “tiro del gallo” is a traditional observance held on Ash Wednesday.

The afternoon games include “porrones” as a piñata, as well as the “baile del charrasque”, danced in pairs while several coplas are sung.
