La Rambla in Córdoba: Ceramics, Churches and Gardens

La Rambla in Córdoba is one of the few remaining isolated centres of artisanal pottery production.

Culture

At the highest point of La Rambla stands the Ermita del Calvario, known as El Calvario.

The present-day Ermita del Calvario dates from the 1843 reconstruction and features a neoclassical design with a transept.

The Museo de la Cerámica displays ceramic pieces and images illustrating the development of ceramics in La Rambla from tradition to the present day.

The museum offers individual and group visits as well as an educational experience.

The Museo de la Cerámica is located in the centre of La Rambla, in an open area bounded by the preserved tower and the last remaining section of the town wall.

The Torre de las Monjas is also known as the Torre de Santo Domingo and is the surviving tower of the former Dominican monastery.

It dates from the second half of the 17th century, around 1757.

The Museo de Alfonso Ariza is a contemporary art museum housed in the artist's former home and studio, which he shared with his wife.

The Naves de la Cerámica are located in the historic centre of La Rambla and have served for several decades as the venue for the annual pottery and ceramics exhibition.

The Romería de San Isidro takes place every year on 15 May. Decorated floats adorned with flowers and horse riders accompany the image of San Isidro Labrador to the Fuente del Abad.

History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción features a Plateresque portal created by Hernán Ruiz I.

The Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad is a single-nave Renaissance building with a barrel vault.

Its chapel of the Blessed Sacrament contains a Rococo altarpiece depicting the martyrdom of the Niño de La Guardia.

A church in La Rambla was recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category in 2003.

Nature

The Jardines de Andalucía are an extensive, wooded park laid out in terraces on La Rambla's natural slope; the park begins at the foot of the former castle wall.

Along the stairways, the gardens feature fountains and waterfalls influenced by Arab horticulture, particularly the Generalife.

The Fuente del Abad is located 500 metres south of La Rambla's town centre on the old road to Santaella.

The site is a large, densely wooded open area with exercise trails, recreational areas and a barbecue area.

La Rambla is one of the municipalities along the Ruta del Vino Montilla-Moriles, which runs through the geographical heart of Andalusia.
