Nature trails between dehesa and oak forest

Dehesas, oak forests and trails through the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Nature Park give Venta del Charco a distinctive natural profile. The Camino de Vuelcacarretas is one of the signposted visitor trails in the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Nature Park. The Aldea del Cerezo–Venta del Charco trail passes through extensive dehesas and the only stand of Pyrenean oak trees in the province of Córdoba. Hiking here therefore brings open landscapes and distinctive tree populations to the fore as independent natural features.

Hiking and nature observation

The Camino de Vuelcacarretas leads into a dense forest of holm oaks and cork oaks, as well as through Mediterranean scrubland. In the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Nature Park, visitors may observe Iberian lynxes, Spanish imperial eagles and black kites, among other species. The route and the nature park therefore offer different observation focuses: the vegetation along the trail and the wildlife of the natural area.

For specific route planning, the status of the Aldea del Cerezo–Venta del Charco trail is important: from 29 April 2026, the hiking trail was closed to the public due to maintenance work. The trail is associated with the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro area designated as a ZEC and ZEPA and passes through several livestock trails.

Visitor centre and village character

A guided, interpretive hiking experience was offered on the Sendero de Vuelcacarretas in Venta del Charco. At the Venta Nueva Visitor Centre, the reception area provides visitor information and a café-bar. An exhibition at the Venta Nueva Visitor Centre describes the Mediterranean landscape of the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro, with dehesas, Mediterranean scrubland and pine forests. Alongside the trail itself, this provides a place for information, rest and landscape interpretation.

The built heritage of Venta del Charco includes the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen. It was built between April and September 1964 and is a modern 1960s building with a rectangular façade, triangular pediment and an attached bell tower. The rectangular façade, triangular pediment and bell tower give the building a clearly recognisable exterior structure and create an architectural accent alongside the nature trails and festivals.

Feria and Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen

Festival culture is also part of Venta del Charco’s public image. The Feria de Venta del Charco takes place every year between the end of July and the beginning of August in honour of the patron saint Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The feria includes evening dances, games for children and young people, gastronomic competitions featuring local products, performances by folk and popular music groups, and communal meals. At the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen in Venta del Charco, there were stalls selling turrón, dancing in the square, ribbon-riding competitions, as well as other games and competitions. The festive programme thus ranges from music and dancing to local products and communal activities.
