Posadas in Andalusia: Nature, History and Culinary Tradition

Nature and Landscape

The La Sierrezuela peri-urban park covers 384 hectares and is located in the municipality of Posadas in Córdoba. La Sierrezuela lies in the transition zone between the Sierra Morena and the Vega del Guadalquivir and is known for its population of dwarf fan palms. The hiking trail in La Sierrezuela begins at a small kiosk with a bar and has showers, parking integrated into the surroundings and an equestrian area. Drinking-water fountains, tables and a kitchen are also among the facilities along the route.

Culture and History

The Eduardo Torroja Bridge is 235 metres long and has seven concrete pillars. Its striking metal structure features eight inverted truss arches. The Barrio de la Morería is considered the oldest part of Posadas and is of historical and landscape value. Its street layout developed organically and is typical of Hispano-Arab settlement centres. The Ermita de Jesús is an 18th-century Baroque temple on the old royal road from Córdoba to Seville.

The Arquito preserves the remains of a gate belonging to the former castle of Posadas. The site has been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (B.I.C.) since 2006. The upper part of the Arquito contains a chapel-like place of worship with an image of the Virgen de los Remedios. Access to this place of worship is through the premises of the Oficina de Turismo. Calle Gaitán is a former caliphate road, royal road and drovers’ route.

The historic buildings and routes preserve different traces of the town’s history: the Arquito refers to the former castle, while Calle Gaitán retains evidence of three former functions as a transport and connecting route.

Culinary Tradition

Posadas’ culinary tradition includes Rinran Maleno, Bienmesabe, Queso de Cerdo and Sopa de Ajo. The Archivo Virtual de Gastronomía Malena contains unique copies dating from 1830, as well as another copy from 1875 with more than 300 recipes from Posadas’ culinary tradition. Posadas has a long-established tradition of olive cultivation. The olives are harvested directly from the tree at the optimum stage of ripeness and cold-pressed to obtain extra virgin olive oil.

In Posadas, named dishes, written recipes handed down through the generations and the production of extra virgin olive oil all represent the local culinary tradition.

Hiking and Adventure

The GR-48 long-distance trail crosses the municipality of Posadas in stages 14 and 15. Posadas Aventura offers four courses and nine zip lines. Numerous paths and trails there are used for sporting activities, learning and exploring the diverse flora. Posadas Aventura is an ecological tree-top adventure park connected to the nearby La Sierrezuela woodland area near Posadas.

The routes and activities mentioned therefore range from the long-distance trail crossing the municipality to the tree-top adventure park and its numerous paths.
