Rivero de Posadas: Architecture, Flamenco and Routes along the Guadalquivir

Architecture and historic character

Between agricultural settlement, Flamenco and routes running parallel to the Guadalquivir, Rivero de Posadas reveals a distinctive side of Andalusia. Rivero de Posadas is an agricultural settlement in the former Vega area. Its project, dating from 1953, was designed by the architect Francisco Giménez de la Cruz, while the settlement was laid out in the 1960s. This chronology connects the design with the later creation of the site and makes the architecture a tangible gateway to the history of Rivero de Posadas.

Since 2008, Rivero de Posadas has been included in the Andalusian Register of Contemporary Architecture because of its distinctive character. Individual elements of the site are also subject to special consideration: the Araar tree (Tetraclinis articulata) in Rivero de Posadas is catalogued and enjoys special urban-planning protection. The church of the colonisation settlement of Rivero de Posadas is recorded as a heritage asset in the RAAC project. Together with the 20th-century settlement design, these features provide several concrete starting points for exploring the history of the site and its architectural heritage.

Flamenco and festivals in Rivero de Posadas

The Feria of Rivero de Posadas takes place around 15 May, the feast day of the patron saint San Isidro Labrador. The Feria includes a competition for paellas and desserts.

The cultural life of the site also includes the Peña Flamenca de Posadas, named after Luis de Córdoba. It is located on Calle Los Naranjos in Rivero de Posadas. Artists who have performed at the Peña Flamenca Luis de Córdoba include Camarón de la Isla, Chano Lobato, Merengue de Córdoba, Chiquetete and Farruco. A total of 28 Flamenco festivals have been held at the Peña Flamenca Luis de Córdoba. The names, venue and festival history give Flamenco in Rivero de Posadas a clearly defined cultural dimension.

December is also part of the site's events calendar: the Asociación Cultural Belén Rivero de Posadas opened its large nativity scene to the public in December.

Routes between Posadas, the river and the trees

A footpath and cycle path connects Posadas with Rivero de Posadas. The route follows the Cordel de Peñaflor, a former caliphate road and later royal road between Córdoba and Seville, and runs parallel to the Guadalquivir. For planning purposes, the route can be saved as a walking or cycling stage; its course parallel to the Guadalquivir provides the landscape orientation.

Another perspective is offered by the Route of Remarkable Trees. It passes through the area of Posadas, Rivero de Posadas and the surrounding countryside and features five catalogued tree specimens: Araar, red eucalyptus, wild olive, mulberry and casuarina. The protected Araar in Rivero de Posadas is thus one of five named specimens along a route that connects the site with its rural surroundings.
