Fuente Obejuna: Modernism, History and Dehesa

The Palacete Modernista de Fuente Obejuna is a monument worth visiting and houses a tourist office, a historical museum, an exhibition room and a conference room. It is considered an outstanding work of Modernism in the province of Córdoba and one of the most significant examples of Andalusian Modernism.

Culture

Casa Cardona is listed as a monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage. The building has a square floor plan, an inner courtyard and a semicircular structure attached to one corner. This rotunda has covered viewing galleries on two levels with stained-glass windows; the Modernist design includes curved window openings, lavish floral decoration, stained glass and elaborate ironwork.

The camarín of the high altar of the Iglesia del Antiguo Convento de San Francisco was created between 1765 and 1782 and features rich Rococo decoration. The Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, formerly the Church of San Miguel, hosted meetings of the Concejo in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia includes a section dating from the 15th or early 16th century.

The Ermita de Gracia is associated with pilgrimages and Romerías; the water from its spring is believed to have miraculous and healing properties.

History

Among the megalithic tombs identified there, the El Dorado dolmen is considered the best preserved to date. The Roman town of Mellaria is located in the vicinity of Cerro del Masatrigo and the reservoir of the Arroyo de San Pedro stream, within the municipality of Fuente Obejuna. Archaeological remains have survived at Mellaria, including wall fragments, a representative building and a fragment of an aqueduct.

The main sites associated with the events commemorated in Fuenteovejuna form part of a Historic Site. Every two years, the inhabitants of Fuente Obejuna perform „Fuenteovejuna“, reenacting the collective uprising against oppression.

Landscape and Trails

The landscape around Fuente Obejuna is shaped by the Dehesa, with holm oaks, cork oaks, pastureland, country lanes and livestock farms. The PR-A 424 hiking trail passes through a varied landscape of fields, olive groves and Dehesa pastures, as well as scrubland and Mediterranean mountain terrain; traditional stone piles, known as majanos, can be found along the route.

The PR-A 424 circular route „Circular de Ojuelo bajos y Ojuelos Altos“ begins in Ojuelos Altos and passes through El Alcornocal and Los Pánchez. The „Tierras de Avutardas“ birdwatching circular route is approximately 30 kilometres long and is suitable for hiking and birdwatching; it runs near the hamlet of El Porvenir de la Industria and is listed as a walking route with an estimated duration of eight hours.

Connections

The N-432 connects Córdoba with Badajoz and is the main access road in the region. From Córdoba, it heads north through dehesas and mountainous landscapes, passing, among other places, Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, Belmez and Fuente Obejuna.
