Moriles: Wine Culture, Traditions and Routes

The Museo del Mosto is located in a converted former lagar in Moriles. It presents traditional grape-processing methods: harvesting, pressing, fermentation, storage and filtering.

Wine and Museums

Moriles has an interactive thematic museum that offers a sensory experience. One centre includes an area for wine tastings and food pairings. A permanent exhibition explores wine culture, the Andalusian region, hunting, bullfighting and the world of horses.

A bodega has been producing many of the great wines that characterise the landscapes of Córdoba for 400 years. The Bodegas de San Rafael preserve their original condition, with tiled roofs and the equipment required for winemaking. Visitors can tour the vineyards and a bodega. The areas open to visitors include old cone-shaped fermentation vats, cellars with oak barrels, the central orange courtyard and an old treadle press where the harvest is processed.

Routes and Nature

The approximately 8.5-kilometre Ruta del Agua is a linear route in Moriles. It has a low difficulty level and is recommended for spring and autumn.

One route passes through the pagos of Moriles, which lie within the Denominación de Origen Montilla-Moriles and are considered particularly rich in landscape. After about one kilometre, the route reaches a junction with the Vereda de los Naranjos; from there, you can either visit the Merendero de la Marquesa or continue to the Lagar de Santa Magdalena. A route in Moriles follows the traces of two Roman roads: the Corduba–Anticaria, which linked Córdoba with Málaga, and the Auringis–Astigi, which linked Jaén and Écija.

A linear route through Moriles extends for around 7.3 kilometres; on foot, it takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, has a low difficulty level and can be completed year-round on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Near Moriles lies Laguna del Rincón, a nature reserve where white-headed ducks can be observed. The Laguna del Rincón information centre is located next to the Laguna del Rincón car park.

Culture and Traditions

The Iglesia de San Jerónimo is a neoclassical parish church in the centre of Moriles. The church contains a work from 1674 made of carved, gilded and polychromed wood. The Semana Santa de Moriles received the designation “Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía” in 2000.

In Moriles, the traditional Roscas de pan are tied with coloured ribbons, placed in wicker baskets and blessed in the church; traditionally, they are eaten with chocolate. Gachas de mosto is a dessert typical of Moriles, made from grape must and eaten during the grape harvest. As part of a tradition in Moriles, typical home-slaughter products and wine with a designation of origin are consumed.

A typical dish in Moriles is a flamenquín around 50 centimetres long. Characteristic local handicrafts from Moriles include ceramics, bronze, copper and brass goods, as well as costume jewellery. The museum shop at the Museo del Mosto sells Gachas, Arrope and other products.
