In Monturque, the Museo Histórico Local de Monturque preserves archaeological holdings ranging from prehistory through Iberian and Roman culture to the Middle Ages. It serves as an interpretation centre for Los Paseíllos, the Roman cisterns and the castle.

Archaeological Heritage

The archaeological remains of Los Paseíllos correspond to the ground floor or basement of a large building, which was probably accessed via a ramp. The structure of Los Paseíllos is partly cut into the rock and semi-subterranean. In archaeological terms, Los Paseíllos are considered a cryptoporticus.

The Cisternas Romanas de Monturque were declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1996. On the Iberian Peninsula, they are a well-preserved example of Roman hydraulic engineering. As an ancient site, the Cisternas Romanas de Monturque are located in the immediate vicinity of Monturque.

The historical references thus range from the local museum’s archaeological holdings to the structural remains and water installations. In Los Paseíllos, the presumed ramp layout, the structure partly cut into the rock and its classification as a cryptoporticus come together. The Roman cisterns likewise represent both a preserved form of ancient hydraulic engineering and the recognised protected status granted in 1996. This keeps both the structural form and the historical classification of the sites visible.
