Pozoblanco: Dehesa, History and Tradition

If you view Pozoblanco through its landscape, the town lies in Andalusia’s largest dehesa. It is one of Spain’s best-preserved landscapes, as well as one of Europe’s most extensive and oldest dehesas. Paths and trails run through the dehesa around Pozoblanco, bordered by long dry-stone walls. Pozoblanco is part of a reserve; its privileged surroundings are used particularly for tourism.

Culture

A tour of Pozoblanco’s historic centre begins at Plaza del Pozo Viejo. The town’s origins emerged here in the 14th century. The first settlements developed around the square.

The tour includes access to six former grain containers. Each of these containers is 22 metres high. Today, the former containers serve as small spaces for temporary exhibitions. Their former function as grain containers and their current use as exhibition spaces are part of the same stop on the tour.

A former grain storehouse from the mid-20th century was converted into an event venue in 2006. The venue has 800 seats. The storehouse thus complements the historical stops with a place whose current function as an event venue is described with a clearly stated capacity.

You can also visit the Sala Museo at the Coso de Los Llanos. The Sala Museo presents more than 100 years of history. Thus, alongside the tour of the former grain containers, the historic centre offers another explicitly mentioned place for learning about history.

Tradition

The pilgrimage of the Virgen de Luna is celebrated in Pozoblanco in February. Pozoblanco’s Semana Santa includes the centuries-old Cantos de Pasión during Lent. The two traditions mark different periods of the year: the pilgrimage is associated with February, while the Cantos de Pasión are associated with Lent.

The return route of the Virgen de Luna pilgrimage to Pozoblanco is 14 km long. The route leads through the dehesa and past stone walls. The return route therefore connects the named pilgrimage tradition with a clearly defined route through the dehesa landscape.

Activities

The Campo de Golf de Pozoblanco is Spain’s first municipal golf course. The largely flat 9-hole course is easy to play on foot.
