Culture

The Pósito de Fuente Palmera is registered in the Catalogue of the Historical Heritage of Andalusia as a generally catalogued cultural asset. Its Baroque portal is considered one of the most representative examples of civil architecture in the province of Córdoba. The building dates from the period between 1767 and 1769. Above the main entrance of the Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción is the coat of arms of Carlos III, referring to the period when the church was founded. The Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción is flanked by two bell towers, which are connected by a continuous balcony with a wrought-iron railing.

The Plaza Real is Fuente Palmera’s main square; the church, the Ayuntamiento and the Pósito are located there. Colonial houses are among the town’s notable cultural and monumental attractions. The first pedestrian-only section of Calle Portales is lined with numerous shops, most of which belong to the textile and wedding sectors.

Historical Traces and Flamenco

The restored historic Carolingian hydraulic complex, Conjunto Hidráulico Histórico, preserves Fuente Palmera’s historic public fountain, which is associated with the founding of La Colonia de Fuente Palmera in 1767. Parque del Flamenco is an open-air museum and interpretation centre that introduces visitors to flamenco through singing, dancing and toque. In the park, visitors can scan QR codes to access recordings by artists and their biographies. Streets and avenues there are named after flamenco figures.

Nature

The Paraje de Los Arroyones natural area can be reached at kilometre 6 of the CP-187 road from Fuente Palmera to Posadas and includes holm oak stands, pine trees and the Arroyo de Los Picachos stream. The area is used for leisure and recreational activities, environmental education, school reforestation activities and sports. It also hosts the Romería de San Isidro Labrador pilgrimage and the Fuente Palmera MTB Rally.

Trails Through the Landscape

The Ruta del Molino de San Roque follows municipal paths between farms through a mosaic-like agricultural landscape towards the fertile floodplains of the Guadalquivir. Molino San Roque is a 19th-century mill with two large parallel towers, an unusual feature in the surrounding area. The official access to the Ruta del Molino de San Roque from Córdoba is via the A-4, A-445 and A-440; the route’s starting sign is located approximately 400 metres after the roundabout at the entrance to Fuente Palmera.

The Rutas de las Fuentes Carolinas can be completed on foot, on horseback, by bicycle or by car and have extensive signage as well as explanatory panels. They pass along the Arroyo de La Plata Chica stream and a small elm gallery forest.

Events

The Fuente Palmera de Boda fair began in 2005 and was held in October. The programme includes exhibitions from the wedding sector, fashion shows, training sessions, demonstrations and concerts; since 2017, it has also included the Certamen de Jóvenes Diseñadores de Fuente Palmera de Boda competition. The Feria Gastronómica de La Colonia de Fuente Palmera combines local cuisine with leisure and entertainment and had already reached its third edition with its third installment.
