Nature and Circular Trails
The Sendero Recintos Fortificados consists of two circular trails: a long route and a short route. Both routes have the same starting and ending point in the Parque Periurbano de Pozo Romero, so the circular trail begins and ends in the same place.
Both routes allow visitors to see various fortified sites within the municipality of Nueva Carteya. The Sendero Recintos Fortificados also offers panoramic views across the municipality of Nueva Carteya.
The trails therefore combine the park’s landscape and the history of the fortified sites in a single circular route. Having the same starting and ending point makes the route clearly recognisable as a circuit. The long and short options are distinguished by their names; both remain connected to the Parque Periurbano de Pozo Romero.
The Parque Periurbano de Pozo Romero has a recreational area with diverse vegetation, which is also part of this site. In addition to the trails, the park includes this recreational area as a separate feature of the site.
Culture
The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol has a popular Neoclassical style. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, giving the church a clear geometric form.
The main altar of the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is crowned by an altarpiece that comes from the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta in Córdoba.
The market at Plaza Marqués de Estella dates from 1927 and displays Mudéjar features.
The Ermita de San Pedro is a simple rural stone building.
It symbolises the origin of Nueva Carteya’s history because it was once a meeting place for the local residents.
These residents once lived scattered throughout the mountains surrounding the present-day town. The Ermita de San Pedro dates back to the 17th century.
Historic Sites
El Higuerón is a fortified settlement with surviving remains of bastions. The settlement is attributed to the Iberian and Roman periods.
El Higuerón comprises two fortified sites with rusticated ashlar blocks.
Plaza de Armas is a protohistoric settlement that continued to exist during the Roman period.
Part of the walls of Plaza de Armas has survived. These walls consist of medium-sized rubble stones, thereby preserving the aforementioned remains of the walls.
