Añora: Dehesa Landscape, Festivals and Cultural Heritage

In Añora, the Museo de Añora displays more than 740 exhibits on the everyday history, traditional festivals and archaeological past of the town.

Other places: El Vacar, Córdoba, El Hoyo, Villafranca De Córdoba, Priego De Córdoba, El Cañuelo, Ribera Baja and Doña Rama.

Culture

A characteristic element of Añora’s traditional architecture is the „fachadas de tiras“: white limewash is combined with granite lines that trace the structure of the houses.

The Puente de la Dehesa has Roman origins and was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, which stands at the highest point of Añora, also dates from the 18th century.

In the heart of Añora stands the Parroquia de San Sebastián, a representative building of the municipality’s historical and spiritual heritage. With its construction in stone and traditional materials, the Ermita de San Pedro reflects the vernacular architecture of the Los Pedroches region.

Añora’s cuisine focuses on dishes made with Iberian pork products, produce from family gardens and typical pastries associated with the various festivals and celebrations.

Festivals

La Candelaria is celebrated in Añora on 2 February with large bonfires; children and young people collect wood for several days beforehand.

Easter Monday, locally known as Día de los Hornazos, is celebrated with a picnic in the countryside and the typical sweet pastry containing a boiled egg. San Martín is celebrated on 11 November with dinner among friends and pranks involving gachas.

On the first weekend of May, Añora opens its streets, courtyards and homes to showcase an old communal tradition. This tradition includes outdoor crosses in streets, squares and courtyards, as well as indoor crosses in houses that are opened to the public for the occasion.

During the day, this tradition allows Añora to be explored like an open-air museum; in the evening, there is traditional music and typical foods shared among everyone.

Nature

Añora’s Dehesa landscape includes traditional livestock farming, including the breeding of Iberian pigs, as well as holm oaks, cork oaks, rockroses, broom, lavender and rosemary. Traditional uses of the holm oaks included producing a very fine charcoal called “picón”, which was suitable for use in braziers.

Among the animals that can be observed in Añora’s natural surroundings are black kites, European bee-eaters, tits, storks and Eurasian scops owls, as well as hedgehogs, hares and wild boar.

Parque San Martín is located about 6 km from Añora, on Cerro del Cuerno at an altitude of 704 m, and serves as a natural viewpoint overlooking large parts of the Los Pedroches comarca.

The Jornadas Ornitológicas is an annual event held in the Los Pedroches comarca. It includes observation routes for identifying various bird species in their natural habitat, including in Parque San Martín and nearby areas of ecological importance, as well as demonstrations of scientific bird ringing.

Routes

The Ruta de La Dehesa de la Vera is 13.8 km long, moderately difficult and fully suitable for cycling. It passes through a landscape of holm oaks, abundant birdlife and livestock farms, and goes past an old FEVE railway bridge over the Guadarramilla.

The Ruta de La Dehesa de la Vera begins about 100 metres from the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña. After turning onto the Camino del Molino del Cubo, its first kilometres pass through the Berrocoso and Cucadero landscape areas.

The Ruta de Las Encinas Centenarias is 6.5 km long, easy and fully suitable for cycling. The Ruta del Tejar de Santa Cruz is 7.7 km long, moderately difficult and fully suitable for cycling; it passes an old brickworks beside the stream.

The Ruta del Pozo de la Torre is 7 km long, easy and fully suitable for cycling. It offers views of the Paraje del Torrequillo, an area associated with the gathering of wild asparagus.

The Ruta de La Losilla is 7.7 km long, moderately difficult and fully suitable for cycling. About 300 metres beyond the junction with the Camino de Dos Torres, a short detour leads to the archaeological remains of La Losilla. The Ruta de La Losilla invites visitors to finish the circuit at the restored Tejar de Abajo.

One of the routes starts at Paraje San Martín and offers extensive views of the surrounding area from a viewpoint beside the Ermita de San Martín.

At the end of October or beginning of November, more than 200 pairs of cyclists meet at Parque San Martín for the Añora Bikend cycling event.

Getting there

From Córdoba, the official route leads via the N-432 to the turn-off near Espiel, the N-502 to Alcaracejos, the A-420 to the turn-off for Añora and then via the CP-281 to Añora.
