Córdoba: Courtyards, World Heritage and the Sierra

The courtyards of Córdoba are recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The residents of Córdoba began opening their courtyards to the public in 1918. This recognition of cultural heritage is therefore linked to a specific, traditionally passed-down development of the courtyards in the life of the city.

The Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba has been recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1984. It is located on the site where the Basilica of San Vicente was built under Visigothic rule. Inside, columns and two-coloured arches shape the appearance of the cathedral. This building therefore brings together the present-day cathedral, its visible interior architecture and an older building history on the same site.

The building history of the Mezquita-Catedral remains spatially connected: the present-day cathedral stands on the site of the former Basilica of San Vicente. In the same interior, columns and two-coloured arches are identified as defining architectural elements; building history and visible architecture thus come together directly.

Historic Buildings

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is a fortress and palace complex preserving Roman, Visigothic and Arab remains. These different traditions therefore belong to a single building and point to several historical periods connected within the complex.

The Salón de los Mosaicos in the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos displays Roman mosaics from beneath the Corredera. Their origin beneath the Corredera remains part of their history, while the Salón de los Mosaicos, as the place where they are exhibited, belongs to the Alcázar.

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos also includes a Mudejar courtyard with marble paving, waterways and pools, as well as extensive gardens. The courtyard combines the marble surface with the waterways and pools; the gardens form a separate component of the complex.

Nature and Hiking

Córdoba's municipal trail network comprises 11 approved and signposted hiking trails in natural surroundings. The number of trails, their signage and their routes through nature are therefore directly part of the municipal trail network.

The Sierra de Córdoba offers natural landscapes just a few minutes from Córdoba city centre. In the Sierra de Córdoba, visitors can go hiking and take part in orienteering. The landscapes and the two explicitly mentioned activities therefore form part of the description of this nearby setting of the city.

One specific route is the trail along the Arroyo Bejarano. It is 12 kilometres long, easy and takes between five and six hours. The route therefore combines a specified length, an explicitly stated difficulty level and a time span of five to six hours.
