Bubión: Culture, Trails and Landscape

The traditional architecture of Bubión comprises steep streets and stepped houses with flat slate roofs adapted to the terrain. Bubión was declared a historic and artistic-historic ensemble by Royal Decree 3237/1982.

Culture

The Church of Bubión was burned down during the Morisco Rebellion and almost completely rebuilt after the earthquakes of 1804. The Ermita de San Antonio is located on the right bank of the Barranco del Cerezo and was probably already a place of worship during the Muslim period. Alguastar preserves the remains of the original settlement of Bubión from the late Middle Ages, including graves from the Muslim period. The Horno de Nade is a traditional bakery oven from the early 20th century that preserves all its original elements.

The Artesa de los Moros is one of Bubión's attractions. The Taller del Telar contains two fully functional looms in a restored traditional home. The Museo Casa Alpujarreña is located in a traditional two-storey house and displays more than 500 objects related to traditional local life. The Museo de la Agricultura de Bubión presents elements of traditional agriculture in La Alpujarra in a building constructed according to traditional models; outside, a threshing machine and an old tractor are part of the museum. It is located next to the Eras de Bubión.

The Mauraca, also known as the Chestnut Festival, is a tradition in Bubión. The Chisco de San Antón is also a tradition in Bubión. The Fiestas de San Sebastián take place in mid-August and end with a procession followed by the burning of the figure-filled float "Entierro de la Zorra", which is loaded with fireworks.

Trails

Sendero 6 runs through the Barrio Hondo de Bubión and via the Plaza de la Iglesia. The Ruta del río Poqueira is one of the routes and trails that start from Bubión.

Landscape

The Cascada del Tejar is an approximately 20-metre-high, two-tiered waterfall north of Bubión's town centre. The Puente del Tejar is located in a gorge on a mid-slope with riverside vegetation consisting of old, large chestnut trees and poplars, as well as terraced cultivated areas; it is situated north of Bubión. The Eras de Bubión lie below Bubión's town centre, towards the river, and offer wide views across the valley.

A large part of the municipality of Bubión belongs to the Historic Ensemble of the Poqueira Gorge. A large part of the municipality of Bubión also belongs to Sierra Nevada National Park.

Hoya del Portillo is a recreational area intended to organise and limit access to the high mountain areas of Sierra Nevada; it includes a car park, a national park information point, two viewpoints and another recreational area.
