Cádiar: Festivals, Landmarks and the Guadalfeo Valley

Festivals and Events

Cádiar's October Fair takes place at the beginning of October and generally lasts four days. It begins with the opening of the Fuente del Vino. During the fair, the Fuente del Vino offers visitors free wine. The festival ends with a procession in honour of Cristo de la Salud and the Virgen de la Esperanza.

Cádiar's Semana Cultural takes place in the third week of August. Its programme includes music festivals, concerts and exhibitions.

Landmarks and History

The Church of Santa Ana in Cádiar was built in the second half of the 16th century after the previous church was destroyed during the Morisco Revolt. The building has a cruciform layout and is mainly made of stone.

The Ermita de San Blas stands in Barrio Bajo, the municipality's old town. It dates from the late 17th or early 18th century.

The Molino de Enmedio in Cádiar is a 16th-century mill. It is located between two other, more recent mills.

The Tinaos of Cádiar are traditional urban structures. Among other purposes, they provide shelter from the weather and connections between streets.

The Posada del Cojo, also known as Mesón del Cojo, served as a stopping place for Aben Jaguar on his journey to Cádiar. Some chroniclers claim that preparations for the coronation of Aben Humeya were made at the inn during the Christmas period of 1568. The year 1568 therefore refers to the Christmas period during which, according to some chroniclers, these preparations took place.

The Castillejo in Cádiar was a Muslim military complex dating from the 13th or 14th century. What remains are side walls clad in masonry, as well as possibly former stables.

Landscape

Cádiar is one of the municipalities in the province of Granada listed within the Parque Natural Sierra Nevada.

The Río Guadalfeo, also known as the Río de la Sierpre or Río de la Victoria, flows through the valley of the same name along the left edge of the municipality of Cádiar. Its fertile banks are home to diverse flora and numerous animal species and are suitable for walks in nature. The names Río Guadalfeo, Río de la Sierpre and Río de la Victoria refer to the same river course in the valley of the same name.

Viewpoint

The Mirador de La Paloma is located at the entrance to Cádiar on the A-348 road. The viewpoint has a picnic area and offers views of the Guadalfeo Valley and the old town.
