Mountain landscape on the edge of the Sierra Nevada
Mecina-Bombarón lies on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada at an altitude of around 1,230 metres. Its elevation places the village within a distinctive mountain landscape and provides an objective starting point for days combining a visit to the village with trails in the Sierra. Different trail lengths and types help keep planned stages around the village clearly organised.
Church, photography and the history of the trail
The parish church of San Miguel Arcangel in Mecina-Bombarón dates from the mid-18th century. It has a rectangular floor plan, round arches and a pitched roof covered with Arab tiles. The permanent photography exhibition by Rafael Vilchez offers a different perspective on life in the Alpujarra. It is located in the lower rooms of Mecina-Bombarón Town Hall and focuses on everyday life in the Alpujarra. The history of the trails also includes the old bridge of the Camino Real, which connected Almería and Granada; its Roman origins are partly attributed to it. The church, exhibition and bridge therefore offer different points of focus, ranging from architectural form and everyday photography to historical connections.
Hiking trails through forests, canals and springs
From Mecina-Bombarón, the Sulayr GR-240 can be accessed on foot or via forest tracks. These routes pass through dense woodland and centuries-old chestnut trees. A described route along the irrigation canals passes ravines with clear water and springs with acidic water. The trail runs for 5 km through the Sierra landscape. This specific length is a useful reference point for planning stages, while the succession of forest, watercourses and springs defines the character of the route.
Connection to Yegen
A hiking trail connects Mecina-Bombarón and Yegen via the Camino Real de las Hoyas and crosses the old bridge, whose Roman origins are partly attributed to it. The trail begins in the upper part of Mecina-Bombarón, in the Plaza Vieja district. This allows the route to be understood as a connection between two villages, while the starting point in the Plaza Vieja district provides a clearly identified point of departure.
San Miguel and the Fiesta de las Castañas
The patron saint festivities of San Miguel in Mecina-Bombarón take place on 29 and 30 September. During these festivities, visitors are invited to enjoy migas alpujarreñas with grilled sardines. On 1 November, the Fiesta de las Castañas takes place in Mecina-Bombarón. The present-day Fiesta de las Castañas dates back to 1986 and includes roasting chestnuts as well as singing and dancing. The two dates have their own place in the annual calendar: San Miguel combines celebration and regional cuisine, while the November event links chestnuts with music and a communal festival.
El Pueblo Libro in the Alpujarra
As part of the municipal project “El Pueblo Libro”, Mecina-Bombarón, Yegen, El Golco and Montenegro are connected through literary elements such as murals, book fountains and literature-inspired hiking trails. The literary project thus extends beyond the individual village and links several villages through visible design and trails with a literary connection.
