Purchil: Church Art, Festivals and the Ruta de las Alquerías

The Iglesia de San José de Purchil has four Baroque altarpieces. Two other altarpieces are Neo-Gothic. There is no main altarpiece because a stone baldachin was installed in the 18th century. The church contains a Virgen de Belén with the infant Jesus. It is a work by the Baroque sculptor Pedro de Mena. The church already existed in 1568. The historic place name “Borch-Hilall”, which corresponds to Purchil, means “Tower of the Thorn” or “Tower of the Needle”.
