Hiking trails between the valley and the nature park

In the northeast of the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, a hiking trail is located in Arroyomolinos de León. The Sendero del Bujo offers broad views over the valley of the Rivera de Montemayor. The nature park and the valley view refer to two different landscape contexts: the nature park denotes the overarching landscape area, while the view places the Rivera de Montemayor at the center. When planning a hiking stage, both the protected natural area and a distinctive observation point are therefore present.

The short Ruta de los Molinos follows the Arroyo Abismo-Morena. Traditional family gardens, Mediterranean and streamside vegetation, as well as the remains of watermills, are part of its route. The route thus passes several clearly distinguishable landscape elements that can be viewed one after another while walking. Its short length provides a manageable framework for a compact stage. On this variant, the Arroyo Abismo-Morena, the gardens, the vegetation and the mill remains are all found alongside one another along the route.

The long Ruta de los Molinos is characterized by the Abismo-Morena and Valdelamadera streams; irrigation channels and dams run along the paths. For a longer walking route, both streams as well as the aforementioned channels and dams are therefore part of the course. The route combines natural waterways with visible built structures, thereby focusing on something different from the section around the family gardens and mill remains.

The Sendero Bonales starts at the Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor and leads for just over seven kilometers through the nature park. The specific length helps classify a hike. The sixth stage of the GR-48 Sierra Morena also begins in Arroyomolinos de León. For the Sendero Bonales, the distance of just over seven kilometers is directly relevant to planning the route. Starting at the church also connects the trail with a building that appears as a named landmark in the townscape.

Mills, buildings and living tradition

The Molino de Atanasio is a restored former watermill and serves as an interpretation center. Another specific landmark is the Puente de la Gitana, which serves as the starting point for the Ruta de los Molinos. In addition to the bridge, there is a picnic area and a small water spot where visitors can cool off during the summer months.

The Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor was built at the end of the 13th century and has a bell gable instead of a tower. The present-day building of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios could be a reconstruction of an older building carried out around 1700; a Camarín was added on the choir side at a later date. The Ermita therefore represents two named construction phases: a possible reconstruction around 1700 and the later addition on the choir side.

The pilgrimage of the patron saint takes place on the third Sunday in May. On Friday, an offering of flowers is made, and on Sunday the decorated carriage is taken to La Mezquita.
