Punta Umbría: Beach, Nature and History

The coast of Punta Umbría combines open beach areas with a landscape shaped by water and tides. The Marismas del Odiel are tidal marshlands at the confluence of the estuaries of the Tinto and Odiel rivers. The tides give the marshlands a different rhythm from Punta Umbría’s open beach and shape the character of the coastal landscape there. Playa de El Albergue lies where the sea meets the Los Enebrales and Marismas del Odiel nature areas.

Playa de El Albergue can be reached via a footpath and a cycle path running parallel to the sea. Playa de Punta Umbría is easily accessible and has several parking areas. Towers, Culture and Roman Traces

Torre Umbría was completed in 1611 and was part of the defensive towers that protected the Tinto-Odiel estuary from pirates. Torre Umbría can be visited free of charge by prior registration through the Casa de los Ingleses. The Casa de los Ingleses is an interpretation centre dedicated to promoting and communicating the British historical and cultural heritage of the province of Huelva.

The Roman archaeological site of El Eucaliptal includes a fish-salting factory and a necropolis; its chronology extends from the 2nd to the 7th century AD. The period represented at the site predates the completion of Torre Umbría; the two sites therefore represent different historical periods in Punta Umbría. The two sites also differ in function: El Eucaliptal includes production and burial areas, while Torre Umbría was one of the defensive towers at the Tinto-Odiel estuary.

Experience the Marshlands Actively

The Marismas del Odiel can be explored by boat, along hiking trails, or on routes by minibus or train; along the way, there are stops for birdwatching. Depending on your interests, you can get to know the landscape from the water, on foot or during a guided trip.
