Lucena del Puerto: Former Monastery, Chapels and Trails along the RÃo Tinto
Culture and History
Lucena del Puerto lies on the left bank of the RÃo Tinto and receives westerly winds and breezes from the nearby sea.
The former Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Luz is listed as a monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Heritage. At the end of the 15th century, it was founded by the Hieronymite Order as a rural monastery estate combining religious, residential, and agricultural and livestock buildings. The church and refectory are late Gothic; some cloisters are designed in the Mudéjar style, while later structures display Renaissance and Baroque influences.
Trails through the Landscape
The SL-A 358 Camino de los Cristos is a 2,645-metre-long linear recreational trail in Lucena del Puerto. It passes through a small depression of ecological value with pine trees, holm oaks, myrtles, and palmetto palms.
The SL-A 359 Camino de las Cabezadas is a 2,301-metre-long linear trail with a fork where you can return to Lucena del Puerto or continue to Bonares.
The SL-A 360 Camino de RÃo Tinto begins in Lucena del Puerto and descends along a paved dirt track towards the RÃo Tinto. This trail is 1,954 metres long and ends with views of the RÃo Tinto.
The Vereda del Camino del Loro passes through pine forest and scrubland belonging to Doñana Nature Park. The Ruta de los Pinos de la Cruz is a three-kilometre-long, undemanding trail connecting the centre of Lucena del Puerto with the Pino de la Cruz recreational area.
The Pino de la Cruz recreational area has picnic tables and benches, barbecue facilities, a children's play area, and fountains.
Chapels and Festivities
The Cruces de Mayo in Lucena del Puerto include four crosses: Calle Castillo, Calle Arriba, Calle Malva, and Calle Abajo. On the day of the procession, the Santa Cruz de Arriba is the only one of the four crosses to return to its chapel; this tradition has existed for more than 80 years.
El Romerito takes place in June, is dedicated to the Virgen del RocÃo, and involves the entire town. During El Romerito, the pilgrimage procession travels on foot or by wagon alongside the Simpecado to the Pino de la Cruz natural area.
The patron saint festivities of the Virgen de la Luz last several days and include a procession of the Virgen on 15 August.
The Capilla de la Santa Cruz de la Calle Malva was built in 1992 by the architect Francisco J. Ramón Girón in the regionalist style and houses a cross created in 1956 in the Seville workshops of Manuel Seco Velasco.
The Capilla de la Santa Cruz de Arriba has a regionalist façade with blue-and-white Sevillian tiles depicting Passion motifs and, in particular, the Stations of the Cross.
