Nature and Trails

In the Tinto estuary lies the Área Natural y Recreativa Salinas y Muelle del Tinto, a habitat of this type that is rare in Andalusia.

The Salinas del Tinto trail is a 1.9-kilometre circular route of low difficulty. It has rest areas and sections suitable for people with reduced mobility.

The Sendero del Muro y Compuertas is a 3.5-kilometre circular route of low difficulty. Along the route, a bridge crosses the first of three sluice gates in the flood protection wall.

The Sendero del Muro y Compuertas is signposted and equipped with information panels on cultural heritage, fauna, flora and local geology.

The Puerta Verde San Juan-Niebla runs through the Arroyo Candón area within the municipality of San Juan del Puerto; there, it passes through a gallery forest and by a historic Roman bridge. The route follows an old drovers’ road, running mostly parallel to the river through a distinctive natural landscape.

The Vía Verde Los Molinos de Agua begins in San Juan del Puerto and ends in Valverde del Camino via Trigueros and Beas. It is a 36-kilometre-long, linear, paved route of low difficulty.

Culture and History

The designated sector of the Lugares Colombinos is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest with the classification of a historic site and includes San Juan del Puerto.

The BIC boundary of the Lugares Colombinos encompasses the marshland south of the town centre of San Juan del Puerto. This corresponds to the historic port of the 15th and 16th centuries and the natural cove that sheltered it.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista is a late Mudéjar church dating from 1500, with later extensions and Baroque alterations.

The Convento del Carmen was founded in 1529 by Juana Lucero. Underground structural elements and the remains of the Baroque monastery church have survived.

The Archivo Jesús Quintero covers 2,000 square metres and contains more than 10,000 hours of radio and television material, 5,000 interviews and a library of more than 700 books.

The Fiestas Falleras de San José are a local cultural tradition featuring cultural, religious, musical and gastronomic events. The 2026 edition will take place from 19 to 22 March.

To commemorate the Columbian event, a meeting day with cultural and sporting events is held every year at the Muelle on 12 October.

In the vicinity of the Área Natural Salinas y Muelle del Tinto, visitors can view the Neo-Mudéjar Sevilla-Huelva railway station.
