Historic Townscape

Cortelazor has a defined historic centre, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Historic Complex.

The historic urban fabric is characterised by narrow, steep streets and irregular blocks of houses. Stone paving adapted to the terrain is also part of this urban fabric.

The varying elevations and irregular arrangement of the houses are therefore immediately visible in the streetscape. The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was built between 1565 and 1587. It was extended in the 18th century.

The church contains 16th-century murals. It also houses a painting of the Divina Pastora. The work was painted by Alonso Miguel de Tovar in 1748.

The Museo de Pintura Pérez Guerra opened on 4 August 2001.

Nature and Trails

Cortelazor is located in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park.

Charco Malo is a pool in a shady valley near Cortelazor. It was formed by a waterfall.

The streams in the municipality of Cortelazor flow through riparian forests. These forests include alders, poplars, white poplars and ash trees.

Los Callejones is a paved path. It runs parallel to the mill stream and crosses the spring area of the Ribera de las Uerbas over a stone bridge.

The Camino de Valdelarco begins at Calleja del Arroyo Abajo. From there, it leads uphill and offers a view of Cortelazor.

Yellow-and-white bands mark the Camino de Valdelarco. In some places, the path may become unclear.

Anyone following this path should keep a close eye on the yellow-and-white bands, as the markings do not make the route clear at every point.

Festivals and Religious Traditions

The Romería de la Virgen de la Coronada takes place on the second Sunday in May.

It includes a procession from the village to the pilgrimage church.

The old Ermita de la Virgen de la Coronada is one of the notable sights associated with Cortelazor.

During the Cruces de Mayo, doors and streets are decorated with adorned cross altars.

The blessing of hornazos is also customary. Bread rolls and traditional sweets are blessed as well.

The Certamen Nacional de Pintura al Aire Libre de Cortelazor la Real took place every summer from 1999 onwards.

Thus, both the annual date set for the Romería and the summer staging of the painting event shape the town's events calendar.

Traditional Cuisine

Cortelazor's traditional cuisine includes game dishes made with venison and wild boar.

Artisan goat cheese and cured meats are also part of it.

Chestnuts and seasonal mushrooms are also part of the traditional cuisine.
