Nature

Jabugo is located in the Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche Natural Park. The protected natural area includes dehesas, forests characterised by holm oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees, streams and low hills. Thus, the landscape features open dehesas alongside the aforementioned types of forest and areas crossed by streams.

Jabugo is one of the 31 municipalities in the production area of DOP Jabugo. This area is located around the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park in the province of Huelva, Andalusia, Spain. The dehesas in this area are recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. The protected designation of origin and the recognition as a biosphere reserve therefore refer to two different characteristics of the same regional setting.

Culture

The Cueva de la Mora archaeological site is located within the municipality of Jabugo. Its documentation covers a broad chronological and cultural period. The topics documented there include settlement, a necropolis, burial rituals, artistic forms of expression and the use of natural resources. The site therefore provides evidence both of life in the settlement and of attitudes towards death, artistic creation and the environment.

El Tiro is a historic building designed by the architect Aníbal González. The building can be visited as part of a visit to the Centro de Innovación y Promoción del Ibérico. It contains information panels and a cellar for tastings. El Tiro also offers views over an extensive dehesa area. The visit therefore brings together the architectural context, information panels, cellar and views over the dehesa in one place.

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel church in Jabugo was built between 1722 and 1746. Its construction combines Mudéjar, Baroque, Neoclassical and Andalusian influences. Inside are sculptures of the Sagrada Familia. Also on display there are paintings of Santo Domingo with the Virgen del Rosario, as well as numerous altarpieces. The church interior therefore complements the architectural context with sculptures, paintings and its altarpiece furnishings.

Crafts and Flavour

In the centre of Jabugo is Montesierra S.A., a company registered under DOP Jabugo. The Montesierra experience includes a guided tour of the company's drying rooms and cellars. The tour can be complemented by a tasting of ham bearing the protected designation of origin DOP Jabugo. The tour and the tasting are therefore described as separate components of the Montesierra experience.

The Centro de Interpretación del Encaje de Bolillos y de la Artesanía Chacinera de Jabugo presents an exhibition on the history of bobbin lace. The exhibition covers the technique and works of Jabugo's residents. The centre's second floor focuses on Jabugo's historical ties to the Iberian pork-processing industry.

The Centro de Interpretación del Encaje de Bolillos y de la Artesanía Chacinera de Jabugo is located at Calle Castelar 6. It can be visited from Monday to Sunday by making prior telephone contact. The visit therefore requires both the specific address and prior telephone contact.
