Berrocal: Nature and Culture

Nature

Berrocal is part of the protected Río Tinto landscape, whose protected area extends beyond the river across the entire municipal territory in the vicinity of the town. The Río Tinto carries red, highly acidic water with a high content of iron salts; its microorganisms are adapted to extreme habitats.

Thus, a broadly defined protected landscape and a river with unusual natural characteristics meet within the municipal territory. The red coloration, high acidity and iron salts are just as much part of this landscape as the microorganisms adapted to the extreme habitats found there.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Berrocal has a Greek-cross floor plan with a central nave and two side aisles. Its façade is crowned by a bell tower with two bells and Baroque motifs.

The church is dated to 1646 as the year of completion; this year is inscribed above the main altar. The Dolmen del Casullo was reused at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC during the Late Bronze Age, with a date of 1,192–998 cal. BC.

In the vicinity of Berrocal is the Centro De Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo Daniel Vázquez Díaz museum. The wider regional area also includes the Iglesia Parroquial San Juan Bautista church.

The cultural heritage thus ranges from a religious building with a clearly defined floor plan and a dated completion to a Late Bronze Age monument and a museum of modern and contemporary art. The different sites and periods each represent a distinct part of the region’s cultural history.

Routes

Berrocal can be reached via the H-9026 from El Madroño and Nerva, or via the H-4103 from La Palma del Condado. The two roads lead to the town from different directions and identify El Madroño, Nerva and La Palma del Condado as starting points.

The Berrocal–Nerva route runs along the Río Tinto and follows the railway through the mining facilities. These facilities include ore-washing plants, embankments and workshops, which accompany the historic route.

The Paterna del Campo–Berrocal route ends at Plaza de Andalucía in Berrocal.

The routes described therefore combine access from several directions with two clearly identified route paths. Along the route to Nerva, traces of the mining facilities lie beside the Río Tinto, while the connection from Paterna del Campo has its designated endpoint in the heart of Berrocal at Plaza de Andalucía.
