Discover Lepe: Culture, Nature and Trails
The Real de la Almadraba de Nueva UmbrÃa in Lepe is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest, classified as an ethnological site. Until it closed in 1963, it was the most important tuna-fishing production facility on the coast of Huelva.
Culture
The free-standing Capilla San Cristóbal dates from the 16th century and is built in the Mudéjar style. During its restoration, parts of the original wall and vault paintings were uncovered or restored.
Plaza de España is located in the centre of Lepe, where the town’s main streets converge. The Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán stands on the square; it originally dates from the 16th century, is built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1985.
The Casa Museo Castillo de Lepe has a library with more than 3,000 volumes. It is intended as a venue for a permanent exhibition on the town’s history and popular customs, as well as for an archive of historical documents.
Parque del V Centenario is home to a group of sculptures created by Francisca Abreu as a tribute to the sailors from Lepe who took part in the discovery of America.
Local Character
Zampuzo El Rata was founded in 1932 and has a history spanning three generations. The owner makes the wine there himself; various dishes or tapas are also occasionally offered.
Traditions
The RomerÃa de la Bella takes place around the second weekend in May and was recognised in May 2026 as a Fiesta de Interés TurÃstico de AndalucÃa, that is, a festival of tourism interest in Andalusia. Cruz Primera has always been a compulsory stop on the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Bella.
Nature
The Flecha de Nueva UmbrÃa is an almost 15-kilometre-long sandbar at the mouth of the RÃo Piedras. As a geomorphological formation, it is considered unique throughout Spain. Hiking, environmental education and birdwatching are possible in the Marismas del RÃo Piedras y Flecha de Nueva UmbrÃa nature area.
Activities
Puerto de El Terrón has facilities for water sports; rod fishing and trolling are possible there. From there, you can travel upstream by motorboat through the Marismas del RÃo Piedras nature area and along the Flecha de Nueva UmbrÃa.
The Ruta de la Tavirona follows the former railway track, which has a predominantly compacted-earth surface. The route is easy and suitable for walking, cycling or exercising; its access as a coastal trail on the Via Verde Litoral is next to the former Lepe railway station.
The Ruta Parque de los Cabezos is a low-difficulty circular route offering views of a wooded coastal area and wide stretches of the beaches.
The Sendero Azul at Playa de La Antilla is a little over three kilometres long and is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects the developed beach area with the dune trail in the Marismas de Nueva UmbrÃa nature area.
