Trigueros – Dolmen de Soto, Churches and Festivals

Archaeology and Visiting

The Dolmen de Soto has a 21.50-metre-long, covered gallery oriented towards the east. The gallery consists of 67 orthostats bearing engravings and paintings. The architectural description thus combines the eastern orientation of the gallery with a clearly structured sequence of orthostats and their decorated surfaces.

Advance booking is required to visit the Dolmen de Soto. Self-guided, guided and group visits are available. The booking must be made before the visit, regardless of whether the visit is self-guided, guided or in a group.

Culture and Architectural History

The preserved church of the Colegio de Santa Catalina displays a pronounced Venetian Renaissance influence, particularly on its exterior. The Colegio was founded towards the end of the second third of the 16th century. In November 2008, it was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad is a building in the Gothic-Mudejar style. It was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The façade and bell tower are designed in the Neoclassical style. The Gospel and Epistle chapels contain 15th-century frescoes.

Festivals and Crafts

The festivals in honour of San Antonio Abad take place in Trigueros on the last weekend of January, provided that the following Monday and Tuesday do not fall in February. These festivities include a novena, the blessing of animals and the Tercia procession.

The traditional Capeas in Trigueros take place from the end of August to the beginning of September. They last for a whole week. In the morning, there are Encierros; in the afternoon, Capeas. The schedule is thus spread across different times of day and continues throughout the entire festival week.

For the “Las Candelas” festival, the first sheaves are gathered from the fields in Trigueros after the Christmas season ends. The gathering therefore takes place after the conclusion of the Christmas season and forms part of the seasonal festival cycle.

Traditional brickmaking remains active in Trigueros. The bricks are air-dried. The moulds are worked by hand, and traditional kilns are used for firing. The manufacturing process therefore includes both manual shaping and natural drying, as well as firing in traditional kilns.

Paths and Landscape

The Vía Verde Los Molinos de Agua can be explored on foot. It can also be ridden by mountain bike. The route can additionally be travelled on horseback or travelled along beziehungsweise traversed in a wheelchair. Its use is therefore not limited to a single means of transport.

Pilar de la Media Legua is a recreational area. It has picnic areas for resting. The site's present-day function is thus expressly associated with opportunities to stay and relax.

Pilar de la Media Legua is also a Roman watering place for livestock dating from the 2nd century AD. It lies on the edge of the former Roman road from Seville to Ayamonte, known as the “Camino de Sevilla”, in the direction of the Dolmen de Soto. The site is surrounded by wheat and sunflower fields. This place therefore brings together its historic use as a watering place for livestock and its present classification as a recreational area.
